Minimum wage

₹13,690

per month (26 days) · Unskilled · Category I — Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad

Pay for 26 days₹13,690
Overtime at 2× (₹131.64/hour)₹0
Minimum gross pay₹13,690
Employee PF (12%)− ₹1,642.80
Employee ESI (0.75%)− ₹102.68
Estimated take-home₹11,944.53
Employer's cost (wage + 12% PF + 3.25% ESI)₹15,777.72

A full month is 26 working days; overtime is twice the ordinary rate (daily rate ÷ 8). PF is 12% of wages up to ₹25,000; ESI applies when gross pay is ₹21,000 or less. Take-home excludes professional tax and TDS. Arrears assume the same shortfall every month; claims under the Code on Wages must generally be filed within 3 years. Estimates — check the order for your employment.

How the calculator works

Choose your state, then the zone or type of employment and the skill level. The calculator shows the minimum wage that the state's latest official order fixes for that combination — the same figure you will find in the order linked under the calculator — and converts it three ways: per month, per day and per hour.

Most orders fix a monthly rate for a 26-day month. Where only a monthly figure is notified, the daily rate is the monthly rate divided by 26; where only a daily rate is notified, the monthly figure is the daily rate times 26. The hourly rate is the daily rate divided by an 8-hour working day. If an employee works fewer than 26 days, the calculator pays the daily rate for each day worked; days beyond 26 are added at the daily rate.

Overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate, so each overtime hour is worth the daily rate divided by 8, multiplied by 2. Enter the salary actually paid and the calculator checks it against the minimum and, if it falls short, multiplies the monthly shortfall by the number of months since the current rates took effect to estimate the arrears owed. You can change the number of months.

Below the result you will find the deductions that usually come out of a minimum wage — the employee's 12% PF contribution and, when gross pay is ₹21,000 or less, 0.75% ESI — giving an estimated take-home figure, plus the employer's total monthly cost including its own PF and ESI share. Professional tax and income tax are not included because they depend on the state and on the employee's other income.

Worked example: Uttar Pradesh

Take an unskilled worker in Category I — Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh. The order in force since 1 April 2026 fixes ₹13,690 a month, which is ₹526.54 a day for a 26-day month and ₹65.82 an hour. Ten hours of overtime add ₹1,316.35. If the employee is covered by PF, ₹1,642.8 is deducted and ESI takes ₹102.68, leaving about ₹11,944.53 in hand for a full month without overtime. An employer paying only ₹12,321 would be short by ₹1,369 every month.

What decides your minimum wage

The state or UT where the work is done. Each state fixes its own rates under the Code on Wages, 2019, which replaced the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. Workers in central-sphere employments — central government departments, railways, mines, oilfields, major ports and banks — are covered by rates fixed by the Centre and notified by the Chief Labour Commissioner, listed in the calculator as “Central sphere”.

The zone. Most states pay more in big cities than in smaller towns and rural areas. Zones are usually defined by municipal corporations, municipalities and the rest of the state, or by named districts — for example Category I in Uttar Pradesh covers Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad. The calculator lists each state's zones exactly as its order names them.

The skill level. Orders group jobs as unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled. Unskilled work needs no training (helpers, cleaners, loaders); semi-skilled work needs some experience under supervision; skilled work needs training and independent judgement (electricians, fitters, drivers); highly skilled work needs a high degree of expertise or responsibility. Some states also fix rates for clerical, shop and security staff, or for specific industries — these appear in the calculator's zone and category lists.

The date. Rates are made of a basic wage and a variable dearness allowance (VDA) linked to inflation. Most states revise VDA every 1 April and 1 October; a few follow January and July or a yearly cycle. That is why the same job can pay a different minimum from one half-year to the next — and why the calculator shows the date the current rates started and whether the next revision has been published.

Is my salary below the minimum wage?

Compare the minimum wage with your basic pay plus dearness allowance. Allowances such as house rent, conveyance and special allowances, bonus, overtime pay and the employer's own PF contribution do not count towards the minimum. Enter the basic-plus-DA figure from your payslip in “Salary actually paid” to see whether it meets the rate for your zone and category.

If it does not, the employer owes the difference for every month since the rates applied. Raise it with the employer first, in writing. If that does not resolve it, you can complain to the state labour department — usually through its inspector-cum-facilitator or online grievance portal — or file a claim for the unpaid amount. Under the Code on Wages a claim must generally be filed within 3 years, so keep payslips, attendance records and bank statements.

PF and ESI on minimum wages

Establishments with 20 or more employees must register with the EPFO. Employees then contribute 12% of their wages (basic plus DA) to the Employees' Provident Fund, and the employer contributes the same, split between the pension scheme and the provident fund. Contributions are compulsory on wages up to ₹25,000 a month — which covers every minimum wage in India.

The Employees' State Insurance scheme covers employees earning ₹21,000 a month or less in covered areas. The employee pays 0.75% of gross wages and the employer 3.25%, in exchange for medical care, sickness and maternity benefits. Because almost all minimum wages are below the ESI limit, most minimum-wage workers are covered by both schemes.

For employers: staying compliant

Update payroll whenever your state publishes a revision, and pay arrears from the date the new rates apply — revisions are often notified weeks after 1 April or 1 October. Keep wage registers and payslips that show basic, DA and deductions separately, so the minimum can be checked at a glance. If you employ staff in more than one state, apply each state's rates to the people working there: the place of work decides the rate, not the head office.

Our daily check watches every state labour department and the Chief Labour Commissioner for new orders, so the rates in the calculator and the state guides change as soon as a revision is published. To prepare payslips with the right figures, use the salary slip generator; for every state's full rate tables, see minimum wages in India by state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum wage in India in 2026?

There is no single figure: each state and union territory notifies its own rates by zone and skill level, and the Centre fixes rates for its own employments. For unskilled work the latest notified monthly rates run from about ₹4,576 (Nagaland) to ₹23,376.43 (Karnataka). Pick your state in the calculator above to see the exact rate for your zone and category.

How do I calculate the daily wage from the monthly minimum wage?

Divide the monthly rate by 26 working days — the convention used in most state orders. For example, ₹13,690 a month is ₹526.54 a day. Where an order fixes a separate daily rate, that rate applies instead; the calculator uses the order's own figure when there is one.

What is VDA in minimum wages?

VDA (variable dearness allowance) is the part of the minimum wage linked to the consumer price index. Most states revise it twice a year, from 1 April and 1 October, so the total minimum wage (basic + VDA) changes even when the basic rate does not.

Which state has the highest minimum wage in India?

Among the rates we track, Karnataka has the highest unskilled minimum wage at ₹23,376.43 a month (in force since 22 May 2026). Rankings change every April and October as states revise VDA.

Does the minimum wage include HRA and other allowances?

The minimum wage is the basic wage plus dearness allowance (VDA). House rent allowance, conveyance, bonus, overtime pay and the employer's own PF contribution do not count towards it under the definition of wages in the Code on Wages, 2019.

Is PF deducted from the minimum wage?

Yes, for employees covered by EPF: 12% of wages (basic + DA) is deducted, on wages up to ₹25,000 a month, and the employer pays a matching share. ESI is deducted at 0.75% when gross pay is ₹21,000 or less, with the employer paying 3.25%. The calculator shows the take-home pay after both.

What is the overtime rate for minimum wage workers?

Overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate of wages. The hourly rate is the daily rate divided by 8 hours, so on ₹526.54 a day each overtime hour is worth ₹131.64.

My state hasn't announced the October rates yet — what should I pay?

Keep paying the latest notified rates. When the revision is published it usually applies from the start of the period (1 April or 1 October), so employers must then pay the difference as arrears. The calculator flags states whose revision is pending, and the daily check updates the rates as soon as the order appears.

What is the national floor wage?

The Centre's national floor-level minimum wage is ₹176 a day (advisory, 2017). It is a reference below which states should not fix their rates; actual state rates are well above it.

Sources

Each state's rates come from its own minimum-wage order, linked in the calculator and in the state guides. Central-sphere rates come from the Chief Labour Commissioner (clc.gov.in). The rules on what counts as wages, overtime and claims come from the Code on Wages, 2019; PF and ESI figures come from the EPFO and ESIC. Figures are checked against these sources every day — read how we verify.
