Canara Bank is one of the largest lenders to small businesses in India, and its MSME menu is wider than most searchers realise: three fully digital loans, a dozen branch schemes, cluster products for textiles, pharma and hotels, and government-backed lines such as CGTMSE and ECLGS 5.0. This guide is for proprietors, partners and directors who want to know which Canara product fits, what it really costs and what the bank asks for. Every rate and fee below was read on canarabank.bank.in on 9 October 2026 and is reported as published, with its effective date. It is a neutral explainer, not a recommendation.

Quick answer

Canara Bank MSME loans are priced at its Repo Linked Lending Rate (8.00% on its site on 9 October 2026) plus a spread set by your risk rating and collateral — 1.40% to 5.75% for loans of ₹2 lakh to ₹1 crore — plus a liquidity premium on term loans. You can apply online for e-Mudra (up to ₹10 lakh), e-Udyam (up to ₹25 lakh) and e-GST (up to ₹5 crore).

  • No collateral up to ₹10 lakh; above that, collateral, CGTMSE or a hybrid

  • Concessions: 0.50% for women-owned MSEs and 0.25% on CGTMSE-covered loans up to ₹100 lakh

  • Term-loan fee above ₹10 lakh: 1.05% to 1.65% of the loan amount by risk grade (from 6 August 2026)

  • RBI raised repo to 5.50% on 7 October; Canara's RLLR had not yet moved when we checked

How Canara Bank prices an MSME loan

Every Canara MSME loan is floating-rate and tied to an external benchmark. Since 1 October 2019 the bank has priced MSME and retail loans off its Repo Linked Lending Rate (RLLR), which tracks the RBI's policy repo rate. Your rate is built in layers: the RLLR, plus a credit risk premium set by the bank's rating of your business and how much collateral you offer, plus a liquidity premium if you take a term loan, minus any concession you qualify for.

Canara's RLLR notice shows 8.00%, effective 12 April 2026; the bank's separate interest-rate-range page shows the same 8.00% but dates it 12 March. Either way, it was the rate on the site on 9 October 2026. That matters because the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October. Punjab National Bank revised its RLLR the next day; Canara had not posted a revision when we checked. Because RLLR-linked loans reset when the benchmark moves, expect Canara's rate to follow, and check the bank's RLLR notice before you sign.

The bank's one-year MCLR is 8.80% from 12 September 2026, but the MCLR notice itself says the switch-over option doesn't apply to MSME loans. If a branch quotes you an MCLR-linked MSME rate, ask why.

Two things stand out in the grid. First, very small loans get a flat, low spread: a working-capital limit of up to ₹2 lakh is RLLR + 1.05% for everyone. Second, between ₹2 lakh and ₹1 crore the range is wide — more than four percentage points separate the best-rated, fully collateralised borrower from the weakest. Your internal rating, your collateral cover and whether you have CGTMSE backing decide where you land.

Canara's MSME loan products

Canara groups its MSME lending into digital loans you can apply for online, general branch schemes, cluster schemes and government-backed lines. The bank's product list names Canara MSME Star, Canara GST, Canara Mahila Vikas, Doctor's Choice and Canara e-GST as general schemes; Canara MSME Textile, MSME Inn and MSME Pharma as cluster schemes; and ECLGS 5.0, TReDS, PSB Loans in 59 Minutes and bill discounting as other facilities.

The digital journeys: e-Mudra, e-Udyam and e-GST

Canara's three online products all run through its MSME Loan Portal, and all three are open only to individuals and proprietorship firms — new or existing customers. Partnerships, LLPs and companies must go to a branch.

e-Mudra is for the smallest borrowers: ₹10,000 up to ₹10 lakh as a term loan, working capital or both, with term loans repayable over up to seven years after a holiday of up to three months. There is no collateral; the loan is covered by the government's Mudra guarantee fund, and the borrower pays that charge. Mudra loans up to ₹5 lakh — the Shishu and Kishore categories — carry no processing fee under Canara's schedule.

e-Udyam lends ₹1 lakh to ₹25 lakh to proprietors who have run an active current account for at least 12 months. It is assessed on credit turnover in your account, GST turnover and balance-sheet analysis. Term loans run up to seven years with a repayment holiday of up to six months. Up to ₹10 lakh there's no collateral; above that, you need collateral, CGTMSE cover or a hybrid of the two.

e-GST is the largest digital line, from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 crore, for borrowers who have filed GST returns for the last 12 months (six months for newly registered firms). Security steps up with the amount: nothing up to ₹10 lakh, full collateral or CGTMSE between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh, and at least 75% collateral above ₹25 lakh. In practice, the online journey gets you an assessment and in-principle decision faster; for larger e-GST limits, a branch still values the property and completes documentation.

Existing cash-credit or overdraft borrowers with limits up to ₹10 lakh can also use MSME Digital Renewal to renew or reduce their limit online for another year, if their account appears in the bank's list of eligible accounts and PAN, Aadhaar, Udyam, mobile number and email are updated.

Branch schemes for larger loans

Canara MSME Star is the general-purpose secured scheme for manufacturing and service MSMEs, traders and professionals — proprietors, partnerships (except where an HUF is a partner), LLPs and companies other than NBFCs. The minimum is above ₹10 lakh and the page states no ceiling. The bank keeps a 20% margin on working capital and term loans (15% on non-fund facilities such as guarantees), term loans run up to 10 years including moratorium, and it wants collateral of at least 100% in property or approved securities. The published rate is RLLR to RLLR + 1.00%, depending on rating and collateral — narrower than the general grid because the loan is fully secured.

Canara GST is a pure working-capital product for GST-registered MSMEs: above ₹10 lakh up to ₹10 crore, nil margin, a 12-month limit and collateral of at least 75%. The catch is in the eligibility: at least 75% of the turnover in your GST returns must flow through your bank account. The product page still says rates "start from 8.25%", which is above the current RLLR and looks like an older figure; rely on the rate page and your sanction letter.

Canara also runs Doctor's Choice for medical practitioners (term-loan spreads of 1.55% to 2.30% over RLLR), MSME Vahan for commercial vehicles (RLLR + 0.90% for new vehicles), and cluster schemes for textiles, hotels and pharma units. Their terms are on the scheme pages and at branches.

Rates you can expect

Put the layers together and the arithmetic is straightforward. A micro manufacturer borrowing a ₹20 lakh, five-year term loan falls in the ₹2 lakh to ₹1 crore band. At today's published RLLR of 8.00%, the lowest spread of 1.40% and the 0.40% liquidity premium for a one-to-five-year loan, the rate is 9.80%. At the highest spread, 5.75%, it is 14.15%. If the loan is CGTMSE-covered, the 0.25% concession brings the best case to 9.55%, though Canara says the final rate never falls below RLLR.

Women entrepreneurs running micro or small enterprises get 0.50% off the applicable rate on new loans, except under schemes where the bank excludes it. The Mahila Vikas scheme, for example, already carries its own band of RLLR to RLLR + 1.00%. For more on concessions across banks, see our business loan for women guide.

One caution on timing: PNB lifted its RLLR to 8.35% the day after the RBI's 7 October increase, while Canara's site still showed 8.00% on 9 October. If Canara moves by the same 25 basis points, every rate in this section rises by about a quarter of a point at your next reset.

Fees and charges

Canara publishes one schedule for non-scheme MSME advances, effective 7 July 2026, with higher, risk-graded fees for loans above ₹10 lakh from 6 August 2026. Amounts are before GST at 18%.

ChargeSlabAmount
Working capital processingUp to ₹50,000; Mudra Shishu and KishoreNil
Above ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh (incl. Mudra Tarun)0.25% per lakh or part (minimum ₹500)
Above ₹10 lakh (from 6 Aug 2026)₹290 to ₹425 per lakh by risk grade
Term loan upfront feeUp to ₹50,000; Mudra Shishu and KishoreNil
Above ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh0.50% (minimum ₹500)
Above ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh1.00% of the loan amount
Above ₹10 lakh (from 6 Aug 2026)1.05% to 1.65% of the loan amount by risk grade

The risk grades — low, normal or moderate, and high — come from Canara's own rating of your account. The August revision added between 0.05 and 0.15 percentage points to each grade for term loans above ₹10 lakh; before it, the range was 1% to 1.50%. The working-capital fee is charged per lakh of limit, so a ₹50 lakh cash-credit limit for a low-risk borrower costs ₹14,500 plus GST at each sanction.

Pre-payment is another cost to check. Under the RBI's 2025 pre-payment directions, banks may not levy pre-payment charges on floating-rate loans to micro and small enterprises sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026. Because Canara's MSME loans are all RLLR-linked, micro and small borrowers should not pay to close early; medium enterprises should ask for the clause in writing. Guarantee fees under CGTMSE are separate — the trust charges between 0.37% a year and 1.20% a year on the guaranteed amount, and the borrower usually bears it.

A worked example: ₹20 lakh for a weaving unit

Take an illustrative power-loom unit in Erode, registered as a micro enterprise, borrowing ₹20 lakh as a five-year term loan to replace four looms. It has a two-year-old current account with Canara, files GST returns and has no property to mortgage, so the loan goes under CGTMSE.

  • Rate, best grade with CGTMSE: 8.00% RLLR + 1.40% + 0.40% liquidity premium − 0.25% CGTMSE concession = 9.55%
  • EMI: about ₹42,053 a month; total interest about ₹5.23 lakh over 60 months
  • Upfront fee: low-risk grade 1.05% = ₹21,000, plus 18% GST = ₹24,780
  • CGTMSE fee: charged each year on the guaranteed amount at the trust's slab rate — budget for it alongside interest

If the same unit were rated high-risk, the rate would be 8.00% + 5.75% + 0.40% − 0.25% = 13.90%, the fee 1.65% (₹33,000 plus GST), and the total interest a little over ₹7.8 lakh. The difference between the two grades is about ₹2.6 lakh on one loan. That gap is why the documents that feed your rating — audited accounts, GST returns that match bank credits, a clean credit report — matter as much as the headline benchmark. If Canara lifts its RLLR after the October repo increase, add roughly ₹240 a month to each EMI here.

Eligibility and documents

Canara's basic test is that you are an MSME under the MSMED Act classification and registered on the Udyam portal — the digital products require a valid Udyam number, and Mahila Vikas explicitly refers to the revised criteria from 1 July 2020. Beyond that, each product adds its own conditions. e-Udyam needs a 12-month-old current account. e-GST needs 12 months of GST returns. Canara GST needs at least 75% of GST turnover routed through the bank. Mahila Vikas needs women to hold at least 51% of a firm or company, a minimum consumer credit score of 650 for each promoter, and two years of operations with a satisfactory track record (new units are considered after a market check).

Documents Canara asks for on branch schemes

0/7

For the digital products the paperwork is lighter: the portal pulls bank statements, GST data and bureau reports with your consent, and loan documents can be signed with an Aadhaar OTP. If your Udyam certificate shows the wrong activity or an old address, fix it first — see our Udyam registration guide.

CGTMSE, ECLGS 5.0 and other government-backed lines

For micro and small enterprises without property, CGTMSE is the main route to a larger loan. The trust guarantees loans of up to ₹10 crore per borrower, with higher cover for women entrepreneurs (90%). Canara uses it in its digital products above ₹10 lakh and in branch lending, and gives the 0.25% rate concession on covered accounts up to ₹100 lakh. Our CGTMSE guide explains the fee slabs.

Canara also lists ECLGS 5.0, the emergency credit line launched in 2026 for businesses hit by the West Asia crisis. It is open only to borrowers who had a fund-based working-capital limit with the bank on 31 March 2026 and a standard account. It gives up to 20% of your peak January–March 2026 working-capital outstanding, at RLLR + 0.75%, maximum 9.00% a year, with no processing charge, guarantee fee or pre-payment penalty, and applications go only through the Jan Samarth portal. The overall guarantee ceiling was almost fully used by late August, so ask your branch whether new sanctions are still possible. See our ECLGS guide for the history.

Through PSB Loans in 59 Minutes, GST-registered businesses that file ITR-3, 4, 4S, 5 or 6 can get an in-principle approval for an MSME loan of ₹2 lakh to ₹5 crore from Canara and other public sector banks; Mudra applicants can use it without GST or ITR. The in-principle letter is not a sanction — the branch still appraises the loan. Our PSB Loans in 59 Minutes guide covers the steps. Canara also lends under PMEGP, PM Vishwakarma and PM SVANidhi, and you can start those on Jan Samarth.

Canara vs SBI vs PNB

All three public sector banks price MSME loans off a repo-linked benchmark, and all three offer digital loans for proprietors. The figures for SBI and PNB come from our SBI business loan and PNB Digi MSME guides, checked the same day.

What the table suggests: Canara's benchmark looked cheapest on 9 October, but only because it had not yet passed on the repo increase; once it does, the three benchmarks will sit within about half a percentage point of one another. The real differences are the spread you are offered and the fee. Canara's e-GST line is unusually large for a digital product, which suits GST-filing proprietors with property; SBI's Digi Sugam is simpler for a quick dropline overdraft. Ask each bank for a Key Facts Statement for the same amount and tenure and compare the APR.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Applying online as a partnership or company. Canara's digital journeys accept only individuals and proprietorships. Firms and companies should go to a branch, or start on PSB Loans in 59 Minutes for an in-principle decision.

Letting GST and bank credits drift apart. Canara GST requires 75% of GST turnover to pass through your account, and e-GST assesses you from returns. If you collect much of your revenue in another bank, consolidate first or expect a smaller limit.

Ignoring the rating grade. On the same loan, a high-risk grade can cost more than four percentage points extra in interest and 0.60 percentage points more in fees. Clear overdues, file returns on time and keep audited accounts ready before applying.

Assuming a fixed rate. Every Canara MSME loan is RLLR-linked. Model your EMI at least 0.50 percentage points higher, especially now that the repo cycle has turned.

Using a term loan for seasonal stock. If you need money for 90 days of inventory, a cash-credit limit charges interest only on what you draw. Size it with a working capital calculator before you ask for a term loan.

After the loan is sanctioned

Once the limit is running, Canara's MSME Digi Portal lets existing borrowers submit stock and book-debt statements, update GST and Udyam details, request solvency certificates and manage insurance on hypothecated assets without visiting the branch. Use it: late stock statements are a common reason for a reduced drawing power, and a reduced drawing power is a common reason a business overdraws and slips into special-mention status.

Working-capital limits are sanctioned for a year. At renewal the bank re-rates you on the year's conduct — whether credits into the account kept pace with your GST turnover, whether you stayed within the drawing power, and whether returns and statements were filed on time. A clean year can move you to a better grade and a lower spread. If you qualify for a better grade, ask for the rate to be revised at renewal rather than waiting for the bank to offer it.

If something goes wrong, raise it with the branch and then through Canara's grievance channel. If the complaint isn't resolved within 30 days, you can take it to the RBI Ombudsman through cms.rbi.org.in. Micro and small units with a dispute about delayed payments from buyers, rather than the bank, can use the MSME Samadhaan portal.

What to do next

Work out whether you need a lump sum or a revolving limit, check which Canara product your constitution and collateral fit, and get Key Facts Statements from Canara and at least one other bank for the same amount and tenure. Run the numbers in our EMI calculator and loan eligibility calculator, and before you apply, confirm on the bank's RLLR notice whether the benchmark has moved since the October repo increase.

Frequently asked questions

Canara prices MSME loans as its Repo Linked Lending Rate plus a spread. Its RLLR was 8.00% when we read the bank's site on 9 October 2026. For loans of ₹2 lakh to ₹1 crore, the spread runs from 1.40% to 5.75% depending on your risk rating and collateral, and term loans carry an extra liquidity premium of 0.40% (1–5 years); 0.80% (over 5 years).
