HDFC Bank is India's largest private-sector bank, and "HDFC loan for business" covers two quite different families of products: an unsecured, fixed-rate Business Loan sold much like a personal loan, and a set of MSME working-capital and property-backed facilities priced off the repo rate. This guide maps both, using only what HDFC Bank publishes on its own website (now hdfc.bank.in), read on 9 October 2026 — rates, fees, eligibility, documents and how to apply — and compares them with State Bank of India's MSME loans. It's a neutral explainer for proprietors, partners and directors, not a recommendation.
Quick answer
HDFC Bank's main Business Loan is unsecured and fixed-rate: up to ₹75 lakh (₹1 crore in select locations) over 12–48 months, with a rack rate of 10.75%–22.50% and a processing fee of up to 2% of the loan. For working capital, it offers the Dukandar Overdraft (up to ₹10 lakh), GST Overdraft (up to ₹2 crore), CGTMSE-backed limits and Overdraft Against Property (up to ₹10 crore), all repo-linked.
HDFC disclosed an average APR of 17.30% on Business Loans sanctioned in April–June 2026
Nil processing fee up to ₹5 lakh and nil foreclosure on fixed-rate loans up to ₹50 lakh for MSEs with Udyam
Business Loan eligibility: age 21–65, 3 years in business, turnover ≥ ₹40 lakh, 2 years' profits

The two kinds of HDFC business loan
The distinction matters more than any headline rate. HDFC Bank's Business Loan sits under its retail lending arm and works like a large unsecured personal loan for business owners: a lump sum with fixed EMIs, decided largely on your credit history, bank statements and income-tax returns, with no property or guarantor. Its fees and charges page describes the interest type as fixed, so your EMI doesn't move when RBI changes the repo rate — in either direction.
The MSME banking products — cash credit, overdrafts, term loans for machinery, CGTMSE-backed working capital and loans against property — are relationship lending. They are assessed on your business's financials, GST returns and current-account conduct, are often larger, and are priced on a floating basis. Every MSME product page we checked carries the same line: floating rates are linked to the repo rate declared by RBI, and such loans are reset at a three-month frequency. With the repo rate raised to 5.50% on 7 October 2026, the next quarterly reset on these facilities will reflect that increase.
As a rule of thumb, the unsecured Business Loan is faster and needs no security but costs more; the MSME facilities are cheaper and more flexible but ask for more documentation and, above certain sizes, collateral or a CGTMSE guarantee.
HDFC Business Loan: amount, rate, tenure and fees
HDFC Bank's Business Loan page offers up to ₹75 lakh — and up to ₹1 crore in select locations — without collateral, guarantor or security, for anything from expansion to working capital. Repayment runs from 12 to 48 months. A balance-transfer option lets you move an existing business loan from another lender, with up to 48 months to repay. The bank also sells Credit Protect, a life-insurance cover from HDFC Life that pays off the loan if the borrower dies; the premium is deducted from the disbursement, so count it in the cost if you take it.
What HDFC charges. HDFC Bank's page titled "Business Loan Interest Rates, Fees & Charges (October 2026)" sets out the numbers below. Note one inconsistency: the main Business Loan page says interest is "starting from 16.85%", and its EMI calculator runs from 9.99% to 24%, while the charges page gives a rack range of 10.75% to 22.50%. Rely on the charges page and, above all, on the Key Facts Statement for your own offer.
| Item | HDFC Bank Business Loan (as published, October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Rack interest rate | 10.75%–22.50% — fixed |
| Actual rates, April–June 2026 | 9.50%–21.03% (average 16.73%) |
| APR, April–June 2026 | 9.53%–26.32% (average 17.30%) |
| Processing fee | Up to 2% + GST; nil up to ₹5 lakh for MSEs submitting Udyam before disbursal |
| Premature closure (part or full) | 4% of principal outstanding up to 24 EMIs, 3% for 25–36 EMIs, 2% after 36 EMIs |
| MSE waiver | Nil premature closure on fixed-rate loans up to ₹50 lakh taken by micro and small enterprises |
| Part-prepayment limits | After the first EMI, up to 25% of principal outstanding, once a financial year and twice over the loan |
| Payment return (bounce) | ₹450 per instance |
| Repayment mode change | ₹500 |
| Loan cancellation | Allowed in the cooling-off period; interest to the cancellation date is payable; fee, stamp duty and GST not refunded |
| Rebooking | ₹1,000 + GST |
| Stamp duty | As per state law |
The disclosed IRR and APR figures are the most useful numbers on the page. They show what HDFC actually charged borrowers who took a Business Loan between April and June 2026: rates as low as 9.50% for the strongest profiles and as high as 21.03%, with an average of 16.73%. Once fees are included, the APR ranged from 9.53% to 26.32% and averaged 17.30%. If your offer is well above the average, ask what is driving it — usually your credit score, vintage, or the size of the loan relative to your income.
Late payment. HDFC's FAQ on the same page says overdue EMIs attract a charge of 1.50% a month on the overdue amount after a seven-day grace period, plus taxes, and the charges table says interest at the contracted rate is charged on unpaid EMIs for the days they're late. Under RBI's penal-charges rules, such penalties must be levied as charges rather than as added interest and must be listed in your KFS.

Eligibility and documents for the Business Loan
HDFC Bank publishes a short eligibility list for its Business Loan. Applicants must be Indian nationals aged 21 to 65, with at least three years in the current business and five years' total business experience. The business needs a turnover of at least ₹40 lakh, annual income of at least ₹3 lakh, and two years of profits. Self-employed individuals, proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs and private limited companies in manufacturing, trading or services can apply. HDFC also says loans are decided partly on how you've repaid previous home loans, car loans and credit cards — so your personal credit report matters as much as the business's.
The turnover floor of ₹40 lakh rules out many very small units. A tea stall or a single-person service business with ₹15 lakh of sales will find the Dukandar Overdraft, a Mudra loan or a public-sector bank's scheme loan a better fit — see our guide to government loans for business.
Documents HDFC Bank lists for a Business Loan
0/8A common reason for delay is a mismatch between the turnover in your GST returns, your ITR and the credits in your bank statement. Lenders read all three together; if they differ — for instance because part of your sales is in cash or goes through another account — explain it in a short note with your application rather than waiting for the bank to ask.
Overdrafts and working capital: Dukandar, GST and dropline
Most small businesses need revolving working capital more than a lump sum. HDFC Bank offers several overdraft routes where you pay interest only on what you use.
Dropline Overdraft (Business Loan variant). Instead of a term loan, you can take the Business Loan as a dropline overdraft of ₹1 lakh–₹25 lakh in a separate current account, with no guarantor or security, for 12 to 48 months. The limit falls every month until it reaches zero at the end of the tenure. The charges are the same 2% processing fee (nil up to ₹5 lakh for Udyam MSEs), premature closure of 4%, 3% or 2% of the existing limit depending on age — again waived on fixed-rate facilities up to ₹50 lakh for MSEs — and a non-utilisation charge: HDFC expects you to use at least 30% of the limit on average and charges 0.10% on the shortfall each quarter, capped at ₹5,000. Drawing above the available limit costs 24% a year on the excess.

Dukandar Overdraft. Built for shopkeepers and small traders: a credit line of up to ₹10 lakh with no collateral. HDFC's page asks for at least three years in operation, a valid Udyam Registration Certificate and bank statements — six months in one place on the page, 12 months of personal and business statements in another, so keep a year's statements ready. Any obligations you already have are deducted when the limit is calculated. There's no processing fee for limits up to ₹5 lakh; above that a 2% fee applies, plus stamp duty and GST. You apply through HDFC's SME pages by choosing Working Capital and then Dukandar Overdraft.
GST Overdraft. For GST-registered micro and small enterprises, HDFC sets an overdraft limit from your filed GST returns rather than your audited financials, with no collateral. The product headline says up to ₹2 crore, although one FAQ on the same page still says ₹1 crore — confirm the ceiling with the bank. You need a valid Udyam certificate, at least three years in business and 36 months of GST returns filed consistently, and you can apply through net banking or at a branch if you hold an HDFC current account.
Repo-linked pricing and charges. Both overdrafts — and HDFC's other MSME limits — are floating, linked to the repo rate and reset every three months. The schedule on these pages shows a processing fee of up to 1% of the facility or ₹7,500, whichever is higher, plus taxes, a renewal fee of up to 1%, and 18% a year on overdue amounts in cash credit or overdraft accounts.
CGTMSE and larger MSME loans
HDFC Bank is a member lending institution of CGTMSE, the government trust that guarantees collateral-free loans to micro and small enterprises. On its working-capital page for businesses with turnover up to ₹7.5 crore, HDFC offers collateral-free loans of up to ₹5 crore under CGTMSE to manufacturers, service firms and retail or wholesale traders. Eligible businesses must have been running for at least three years and profitable for two; turnover between ₹60 lakh and ₹7.5 crore is the band for this product, with a separate route for larger firms. Collateral such as residential, commercial or industrial property, fixed deposits or liquid securities is accepted where you choose secured pricing.

A caution on figures: HDFC's own CGTMSE page still describes a ₹5 crore guarantee ceiling and a top annual fee of 1.35%. Those are out of date. CGTMSE now guarantees loans up to ₹10 crore, and its current annual guarantee fees run from 0.37% to 1.20% of the amount covered, depending on loan size. The fee is usually passed on to you, so add it to the APR when comparing offers. Separately, RBI tells banks not to take collateral on loans to micro and small enterprises up to ₹20 lakh, so for smaller loans you shouldn't need either property or a guarantee fee.
HDFC publishes its own indicative processing times on the same page: proposals up to ₹5 lakh within two weeks, ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh within four weeks, and above ₹25 lakh within eight weeks. Note that RBI's MSME guidance expects banks to decide on loans to micro and small enterprises up to ₹25 lakh within 14 working days once the application is complete, so if a small proposal stalls, ask for a written decision.
Term loans and property-backed limits. For machinery or expansion, HDFC's MSME term loans run for up to five years, with or without collateral at the bank's discretion. Its Overdraft Against Property gives up to ₹10 crore against residential, commercial or industrial property for MSMEs with Udyam registration, three years of operations, 12 months of GST returns and at least a year's current account with HDFC. The page quotes 9.00% to 11.00% a year, without a date — treat that as indicative and check the rate after the October 2026 repo increase. HDFC also lends under PMEGP, Stand-Up India, PMFME, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund and the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups.
HDFC vs SBI: which suits your business?

Here is what the pricing gap means in rupees. A ₹10 lakh unsecured loan from HDFC at its April–June 2026 average rate of 16.73% over 36 months has an EMI of about ₹35,518 and total interest of about ₹2.79 lakh; with a 2% fee, the APR is about 18.2%. A ₹10 lakh SBI pre-approved loan priced, say, at 10.15% over 48 months has an EMI of about ₹25,435, interest of about ₹2.21 lakh and an APR of about 10.3% with the 0.30% fee. The SBI rate here is an illustration, because SBI publishes only its benchmark and not your premium.
The cheaper option isn't always available to you. SBI's pre-approved loans go only to existing customers the bank has already scored, and its larger MSME loans need the full set of financials. HDFC's unsecured loan can be quick if your credit history is strong, and its fixed rate protects you from repo increases like October's. A sensible approach for a business that needs money in days is to take the smaller fixed-rate loan you can afford and, once your MSME limits are in place at either bank, use the nil-foreclosure waiver for MSEs to prepay it. Our EMI guide explains how to compare offers on APR.

Check the APR, fixed or floating rate, fees, insurance, prepayment terms and cooling-off period before you sign.
After disbursal, download your repayment schedule from HDFC's website rather than asking for a physical copy, which costs ₹50. If you change the bank account your EMIs are debited from, the repayment-mode change costs ₹500. For overdraft limits, keep utilisation above 30% on average if you want to avoid the non-utilisation charge, and file GST returns on time — the GST Overdraft limit is renewed against them.
You can cancel a Business Loan within the cooling-off period by repaying the principal and the interest to date, but the processing fee, stamp duty and GST are not refunded. If something goes wrong, raise a complaint with HDFC Bank's grievance redressal channels first; if it isn't resolved within 30 days, or you're unhappy with the reply, take it to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Frequently asked questions
HDFC Bank's fees and charges page, dated October 2026, gives a rack rate of 10.75% to 22.50% for its unsecured Business Loan, which is a fixed-rate loan. The bank also discloses what it actually charged: between April and June 2026 rates ranged from 9.50% to 21.03%, averaging 16.73%, and the APR including fees averaged 17.30%. MSME overdrafts and cash credit are floating and linked to the repo rate.
The unsecured Business Loan goes up to ₹75 lakh, or ₹1 crore in select locations, with no collateral or guarantor. For working capital, HDFC's Dukandar Overdraft offers up to ₹10 lakh and its GST Overdraft up to ₹2 crore without collateral, and working capital loans for businesses with turnover up to ₹7.5 crore can be collateral-free up to ₹5 crore under CGTMSE.
For the unsecured Business Loan, HDFC Bank lists Indian applicants aged 21 to 65, at least three years in the current business and five years' total business experience, a turnover of ₹40 lakh or more, annual income of at least ₹3 lakh and two years of profits. Proprietors, partnerships, LLPs and private limited companies in manufacturing, trading or services can apply.
Up to 2% of the loan amount plus GST. HDFC Bank charges no processing fee on loans up to ₹5 lakh to micro and small enterprises that submit their Udyam Registration Certificate before disbursal, and no processing fee or ad hoc charges on priority-sector loans up to ₹50,000. Senior citizens get a 10% discount on service charges.
On its unsecured Business Loan the published charge is 4% of principal outstanding up to 24 EMIs, 3% from 25 to 36 EMIs and 2% after that, plus GST. But HDFC Bank charges nil foreclosure or prepayment charges on fixed-rate loans up to ₹50 lakh taken by micro and small enterprises, so submitting your Udyam certificate matters.
It depends on the product. SBI's MSME loans are floating and priced off its External Benchmark Rate, with low fees on pre-approved loans, but usually need more paperwork for new customers. HDFC's unsecured Business Loan is fixed-rate, quick and collateral-free up to ₹75 lakh, but its average APR was 17.30% in April–June 2026. Compare the APR in each Key Facts Statement.
