IDTR Jamshedpur — the Indo Danish Tool Room at Gamharia — is where a lot of Class 10 students from Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal go to become tool and die makers, and where Jamshedpur's auto-component and steel suppliers send drawings for moulds, dies and precision parts. Most searches are about three things: the diploma fee, the entrance test and the address. This guide answers all three from IDTR's official 2026-27 prospectus, its lateral-entry brochure and NSQF course list, and the Ministry of MSME's list of tool rooms. It also covers the short courses, the three extension centres and what a small manufacturer can buy from the tool room.
Quick answer
IDTR Jamshedpur (Indo Danish Tool Room, also called MSME Tool Room Jamshedpur) is a Government of India society under the Ministry of MSME at M-4 (Part), Phase VI, Tata-Kandra Road, Gamharia, Jamshedpur 832108. It runs a four-year Diploma in Tool & Die and a three-year Diploma in Advanced Mechatronics & Industrial Automation (both AICTE-approved), NCVT ITI trades, NSQF courses in CNC, CAD/CAM and automation, and a production wing that makes moulds, dies, jigs and precision parts for industry.
Diploma tuition: ₹23,000 a semester for 2026-27; first semester ₹34,300 with deposits; no tuition fee for SC/ST
Eligibility: Class 10 with Maths and Science, 50% marks (40% reserved categories), age 15 to 19 years on 1 July
2026 cycle: forms 1 April–15 June, entrance test 28 June, classes from 5 August
Extension centres: Tool Room & Training Centre Patna, MSME Samsung Technical School Varanasi, MSME Multi-Skill Technical Centre Godda
What IDTR is
IDTR was set up in 1991 under a bilateral agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Denmark, which is where the "Indo Danish" name comes from. The then Bihar government provided the infrastructure; after Jharkhand was carved out in 2000, the campus ended up in the new state. The Development Commissioner (MSME)'s older profile notes that it was originally called the Central Tool Room & Training Centre, Jamshedpur. Today it is an autonomous society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, run by a governing council chaired by the Development Commissioner (MSME). A General Manager handles day-to-day operations.
The Ministry of MSME lists IDTR among its 18 Tool Rooms and Technology Centres and gives its sector as "General Engineering (Auto parts – Metal)". That fits its location: the Adityapur–Gamharia industrial area next to Jamshedpur is packed with suppliers to Tata Motors, Tata Steel and their tier-1 vendors. IDTR's own figures put the campus at 11.3 acres, plant and machinery at about ₹60 crore, and four computer labs, with hostels and a guest house on site. It holds ISO 9001:2015 certification.
The institute now brands itself MSME Technology Centre, Jamshedpur on the prospectus cover. It's the same body — not one of the newer MSME Technology Centres built under the Technology Centre Systems Programme, which our MSME Technology Centres guide explains.

IDTR Jamshedpur courses in 2026
IDTR trains at four levels: AICTE diplomas after Class 10, NCVT ITI trades, NSQF-aligned certificate courses of 390 to 2,400 hours, and short skill courses of one to six weeks. The diplomas are the big draw, but the NSQF and short courses are where most working technicians and engineering students end up.
| Course | Duration | Entry | Seats / batch | Fee (official) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diploma in Tool & Die under Mechanical Engineering (DTDUM) | 4 years (8 semesters) | Class 10, Maths & Science, 50% | 300 | ₹23,000 tuition per semester |
| Diploma in Advanced Mechatronics & Industrial Automation (DAMIA) | 3 years (6 semesters) | Class 10, Maths & Science, 50% | 120 | ₹23,000 tuition per semester |
| ITI — Machinist, Fitter, Turner, Tool & Die Maker, Electrician (NCVT) | 2 years | Class 10 | Not published | Ask the training wing |
| ITI — Welder; Computer Hardware & Network Maintenance (NCVT) | 1 year | Class 8 or 10 / Class 10 | Not published | Ask the training wing |
| NSQF courses, e.g. CNC Programmer – Tool Room, Junior Designer CAD/CAM | 600 hours | Diploma or B.Tech | 30 | ₹29,700 |
| NSQF Asst. Operator – CNC Turning / CNC Milling (Tool Room) | 600 hours | Class 10 | 30 | ₹29,700 |
| NSQF Jr. Technician – Tool & Die Maker; Asst. Operator – Conventional Machines | 1,200 hours | Class 10 / Class 8 | 30 | ₹59,100 |
Seats and fees for the diplomas come from the 2026-27 prospectus; NSQF fees from IDTR's current NSQF course list. All AICTE, NCVT and NSQF courses are free of tuition for SC/ST candidates.
The DTDUM diploma is recognised by Jharkhand University of Technology (JUT) as equivalent to a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, so you can sit the state's lateral-entry exam for the second year of a B.Tech after it. The fourth year is mostly industrial training: semesters 7 and 8 are in-plant training, a written test and a project. The earlier semesters cover fitting, turning, milling and grinding, jigs and fixtures, press tool and mould design, die-casting design, AutoCAD, NC programming and hydraulics. DAMIA swaps much of the tooling content for electronics, PLCs, SCADA and HMI, microcontrollers, CAD/CAM and robotics.
A word on old numbers: IDTR's FAQ page still says the diploma tuition is ₹18,000 a semester. That figure is out of date — the 2026-27 prospectus, which is the document you sign up under, charges ₹23,000. Aggregator sites copy the FAQ figure, so budget on the prospectus.
Fees for the 2026-27 session
The prospectus gives a semester-by-semester fee table. The first semester is the expensive one because it carries the deposits and one-time charges.
| Semester | What you pay | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tuition ₹23,000 + sports, record book, library, computer lab, insurance, souvenir (₹1,300) + placement cell ₹2,000 + security deposit ₹2,000 (refundable) + library deposit ₹1,000 (refundable) + building establishment ₹5,000 | ₹34,300 |
| 2 and 4 | Tuition + library + computer lab | ₹23,500 each |
| 3 and 5 | Tuition + sports, record book, library, lab, insurance, souvenir | ₹24,300 each |
| 6 | Tuition + library + lab + ₹900 convocation | ₹24,400 |
| 4th year (semesters 7–8, DTDUM only) | ₹46,000 tuition + other charges | ₹48,400 |
Worked example — DTDUM, general category, day scholar: ₹34,300 + ₹23,500 + ₹24,300 + ₹23,500 + ₹24,300 + ₹24,400 + ₹48,400 = ₹2,02,700, plus the ₹700 prospectus and ₹200 identity card, so about ₹2.03 lakh over four years. ₹3,000 of that is refundable deposit. The three-year DAMIA stops at semester 6, which brings it to about ₹1.55 lakh all-in. You also buy your own uniform, safety shoes and drawing instruments, and the prospectus advises a laptop for design and AutoCAD classes.
An SC or ST student pays no tuition, so the bill falls to the non-tuition charges — roughly ₹11,300 in the first semester and a few hundred rupees in most later semesters. OBC students from Jharkhand can apply for the state's e-Kalyan scholarship, and the prospectus mentions a Cummins scholarship awarded on a test for all categories.
Late fees are steep. Semester and hostel fees can be paid up to two weeks late with a ₹2,500 fine on each; after that you can't attend without the competent authority's approval. All fees go through SBI Collect — IDTR doesn't accept cash.
Eligibility and the entrance test
For the regular diploma you need Class 10 (or equivalent) from a recognised board with Mathematics and Science, and at least 50% aggregate — 40% if you are SC, ST, OBC or a person with a disability. Your age on 1 July of the admission year must be between 15 and 19 years, relaxed to 22 for SC, ST, OBC and PH candidates. Students waiting for Class 10 results can sit the test, but must have the marksheet at admission. Girls can apply to both diplomas.
The written test is objective, at Class 10 level, covering English, Mathematics, Science and General Knowledge/Aptitude. IDTR publishes sample questions with the prospectus. Selection is on an all-India merit list, with Government of India reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PH candidates. The prospectus advises colour-blind students not to join, and PH candidates must be able to stand unsupported and use both hands — it's a hands-on machine course.
How to get an IDTR diploma seat
- 1
Buy the prospectus and form
Pay ₹700 (₹350 for SC/ST/PH) through the SBI Collect link on idtr.gov.in, then download the form, or collect it at the main gate. In 2026 forms were on sale from 1 April to 15 June.
- 2
Send the filled form
Post or hand it to the General Manager, Indo Danish Tool Room, M-4 (Part), Phase VI, Tata-Kandra Road, Gamharia, Jamshedpur 832108, marked 'Application for Diploma Courses', with the payment receipt. Attach an online-verifiable caste/EWS certificate if you claim reservation.
Tip: OBC certificates must be issued on or after 1 April of the admission year; Jharkhand JHCBC (creamy layer) certificates don't qualify without Form-11.
- 3
Download the admit card
Admit cards go up on the website about a week before the test (from 22 June in 2026). Paste the same colour photo on the form and admit card. No duplicates are issued.
- 4
Sit the test
Objective paper at Class 10 level in English, Maths, Science and GK/aptitude, held at IDTR (28 June 2026).
- 5
Attend counselling by category
In 2026: 10, 11 and 13 July for unreserved, EWS and PH; 15 and 17 July for OBC; 20 July for SC/ST; with waiting-list rounds on 14, 18 and 21 July. Bring originals, Aadhaar and a medical fitness certificate on IDTR's format.
- 6
Pay and join
Pay the first semester (₹34,300 for general candidates) on SBI Collect. Classes began on 5 August 2026.
Lateral entry. IDTR also fills seats left vacant from the previous batch through a lateral-entry test. In 2026 there were 49 seats in DTDUM and 7 in DAMIA. You need Class 10 plus a two-year ITI in a relevant trade, or Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, or a pass in the first year of a related diploma — with 50% marks (40% reserved). The age band is 16 to 20 (23 for SC/ST/OBC) on 1 July. The 2026 test was on 30 July and lateral entrants joined with the main batch on 5 August. They pay from semester 3 onwards, starting at ₹34,300.
Rules to know before you join. You need 80% attendance to sit semester exams, with no relaxation. The course is full-time and practical, so you can't take another course, a part-time job or evening classes alongside it. A trainee who joins late can be allowed up to 15 days with good reason, but the lost time isn't made up.
Hostel and living costs
IDTR has separate hostels for boys and girls, given on availability to outstation students. A parent has to request a room on the prescribed form, and the student can leave the hostel only with the parent's consent.
The 2026-27 prospectus lists four hostel charges. Each semester you pay an establishment charge of ₹9,000, ₹600 for electricity and a ₹3,400 mess advance. At admission you also pay one-time amounts of ₹500 (admission fee), ₹1,000 (hostel security) and ₹4,000 (mess security), and the two security deposits are refunded without interest when you finish, after any dues are adjusted.
So a hosteller pays about ₹13,000 a semester before meals, on top of course fees. Meal charges have to be paid by the 10th of each month through SBI Collect. If you leave mid-semester, the unused hostel fee is not refunded.
Short courses, NSQF courses and internships
If you already have an ITI, a diploma or a B.Tech, IDTR's shorter courses are the practical route. They run on a first-come, first-served basis with no entrance test; you register with a ₹1,000 non-refundable fee and pay the course fee before the batch starts.
The NSQF list covers about 50 qualifications. The tool-room ones are the most relevant: CNC Programmer – Tool Room (600 hours, for diploma or B.Tech holders), Technician – CNC Machining (600 hours, for ITI holders), Assistant Operator CNC Turning and CNC Milling (600 hours, Class 10), Junior Designer CAD/CAM, Senior Technician – Machine Maintenance & Automation, Jr. Technician – Tool & Die Maker (1,200 hours) and Jr. Technician – Heat Treatment. A 600-hour course costs ₹29,700 and a 1,200-hour one ₹59,100; the list also has footwear, aroma processing, IT, animation and electronics courses. For a comparison with other government CNC courses, see our CNC training courses guide.

Free residential batches. In August 2026 IDTR advertised free residential NSQF courses — CNC Programmer – Tool Room for mechanical, production and automobile diploma holders, and Senior Technician – Machine Maintenance & Automation for electrical and electronics diploma holders — free for SC/ST candidates with food and lodging, sponsored through the National SC-ST Hub. The last date was extended to 22 August 2026. IDTR has run similar sponsored batches under other schemes, so watch the notices page.
Short skill courses cover AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, NX, SolidWorks, ANSYS, HyperWorks, Mastercam and DELMIA; CNC turning on Fanuc and CNC milling on Fanuc and Heidenhain controls; EDM and wire EDM; press tool, die-casting, mould and fixture design; PLC and SCADA; CNC commissioning and maintenance at the Siemens-authorised training centre; CMM operation; and mobile phone repair.
Internships. IDTR posts a summer internship brochure each year. The 2026 edition offered four-week internships at ₹2,360 for mechanical, production, automobile, electrical and electronics students, and NSQF-exempt courses such as SolidWorks, CNC programming (lathe) and CNC machining (lathe) at ₹7,080, with fee concessions for general, EWS and OBC students and no course fee for SC/ST. The brochure gave its venue as an academic building on the JUT campus at Namkum, Ranchi, so check where your batch runs. Registration is on 9431301686 / 8709478036 or [email protected].
Placements
IDTR says almost all its long-term trainees are placed and lists a long roll of recruiters in the 2026 prospectus. Automotive names include Maruti Suzuki, Honda Cars, Tata Motors, Force Motors, Tata Cummins, Hero MotoCorp, Mahindra CIE, Minda, Varroc and Brakes India. Steel and engineering recruiters include Tata Steel, Jindal Steel & Power, Tata BlueScope, Ramkrishna Forgings, TRL Krosaki and Metalsa. On the aerospace and tooling side the list includes Tata Boeing Aerospace, Tata Advanced Systems, Tata Electronics, Makino India and Jyoti CNC Automation.
IDTR doesn't publish salary data. A tool-room diploma holder usually starts on a trainee or apprentice stipend and moves to a full salary after the first year; ask the placement cell ([email protected], 8252913880) what last year's batch was offered, company by company, before you choose between DTDUM and DAMIA. The institute also takes apprentices under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme — its 2026-27 notice went up in April 2026.

Patna runs its own diploma entrance test with a separate prospectus. Its course page also lists two-week CNC turning and milling courses at ₹4,000 and one-month CAD courses at ₹8,000, but that table names software versions that are years old, so confirm current fees with the centre before you pay.
Tool room services for MSMEs
For a small manufacturer, IDTR is a government-run tool maker and machine shop. Its production wing designs and builds plastic injection moulds, pressure die-casting dies, rubber moulds, press tools for sheet metal, jigs, fixtures and gauges, and machines precision and hard-material components. It also offers vacuum heat treatment, CMM inspection, laser calibration of machine tools, a try-out production facility, maintenance, business incubation and consultancy in tool engineering, PLC programming, lean, 5S, TQM and Six Sigma.
What to send IDTR for a quote
0/6IDTR publishes machine-hour rates in its user-charges disclosure. The last revision on that sheet is dated 26 April 2019, so treat the numbers as a floor rather than today's price. It lists, for example, design and development at ₹600 an hour, CNC turning ₹350, CNC milling ₹500, CNC wire-cut ₹450–650, CNC jig grinding ₹1,000, CMM inspection ₹1,000 and vacuum heat treatment ₹200 a kg (minimum load 200 kg). GST is extra. Ask marketing for a current quote and compare it with two private tool rooms; our quotation generator helps you line them up on the same terms. Keep your Udyam registration handy — MSME-linked schemes, including the SC-ST Hub programmes IDTR runs, ask for it.
