A Udyam registration is permanent, but the information behind it isn't. You move premises, open a second unit, change your bank, start a new product line, or simply grow past the micro limits — and banks, GeM, tender committees and buyers will all read your certificate as it stands. This guide explains the Udyam registration update in 2026: how to edit your details free on the government portal, what the annual ITR and GST update does to your classification, what happens to your benefits when you move from micro to small (or back), how to fix a lost mobile number, and when and how to cancel.

Quick answer

To update Udyam, open udyamregistration.gov.in → Update/Cancel Udyam Registration, log in with your Udyam number, registered mobile and an OTP, edit the details and submit with OTP. It's free. There's no renewal, but you must keep ITR and GST details for the previous year updated — the portal reclassifies you from that data, and not updating can lead to suspension.

  • Updating fee: Free — ignore sites that charge for 'Udyam update'

  • Moved up from micro to small? You keep the old category's non-tax benefits for three years from the date of the upward change

  • Moved down? The lower category applies from 1 April of the next financial year

  • One registration per enterprise — add units and activities to it, don't register again

What can be updated — and what can't

Udyam registration rests on two identity anchors: the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, and the enterprise's PAN. Almost everything else you entered can be edited through the update option:

You can updateHow it's checked
Enterprise name and organisation detailsShould match PAN and GST records
Official address and plant/unit locationsSelf-declared; add every unit you operate
Bank account and IFSCSelf-declared; used by schemes and buyers
Major activity and NIC codesAdd manufacturing or service activities you actually carry on
Number of employees (male, female, others)Self-declared
Investment and turnover for years without ITRSelf-declared until the first ITR is filed
Mobile number and emailOTP to the currently registered mobile or email
GSTINMust be given where GST registration is required under the CGST Act
Interest in schemes (GeM, TReDS, NSIC etc.)Optional selections

What you can't do through an update is swap the PAN on which the enterprise is registered. If the business itself changes legal form — a proprietorship converted into a private limited company, for example — the new company has its own PAN and is a different enterprise in law, so it needs its own Udyam registration, and the old one should be cancelled once the proprietorship stops trading. The same logic applies to a partnership reconstituted with a new PAN.

Investment and turnover figures for years with a filed ITR are taken from income tax and GST data; you can't override them by typing different numbers. If the classification looks wrong, the fix is usually in your ITR or GST returns — for example, exports reported incorrectly, or a GSTIN on the same PAN you forgot was still active.

How to update your Udyam registration, step by step

Updating Udyam on the government portal

  1. 1

    Open the update option

Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose Update/Cancel Udyam Registration (it opens the Udyami Login page).

Tip: Type the address yourself. Several look-alike sites charge for 'updates' that are free on the government portal.

    Udyami Login (Update/Cancel)
  2. 2

    Log in with OTP

Enter your Udyam Registration Number (UDYAM-XX-00-0000000), the mobile number given in the registration, choose OTP on mobile or email, and validate.

  3. 3

    Choose update

Pick the option to update the registration. The form opens with your existing details.

  4. 4

    Edit the sections that changed

Change addresses, add units, edit bank details, add NIC codes and activities, revise employee numbers, or update contact details.

Tip: Add a new factory as an additional unit — don't file a second registration.

  5. 5

    Declare and submit

Tick the declaration, submit, and confirm with the final OTP.

  6. 6

    Download the updated certificate

Print the certificate and annexure again so banks and buyers see the current details.

Changes appear on the e-certificate once processed. Download a fresh copy whenever you update and at least once a year after the ITR and GST data for the previous year has flowed in — our guide to downloading the Udyam certificate covers printing, QR verification and recovering a forgotten Udyam number.

Lost the registered mobile? The OTP can go to the registered email instead. If you've lost both, get the old SIM reissued by your telecom operator, or approach the District Industries Centre (DIC) or the MSME Champions helpdesk ([email protected], +91 8308809334 by phone or WhatsApp, Monday–Friday 10 am–6 pm) for help.

The annual update: ITR, GST and suspension risk

Paragraph 8 of the Udyam notification (S.O. 2119(E) of June 2020, still the base text after the 2025 revision of limits) puts a continuing duty on every registered enterprise. In plain terms:

  • You must update your information online, including the details of your ITR and GST return for the previous financial year, on self-declaration.
  • If you don't update within the period the portal specifies, your enterprise is liable to suspension of its status.
  • Based on what you furnish or what the government gathers from its own sources, including ITR and GST returns, your classification will be updated.
  • If you move up or down a category, you'll get a communication about the change.

In practice, much of the data now comes through automatically: investment is linked to the ITR and turnover to the ITR and GSTIN, so the classification shown in your certificate's annexure changes year by year without you typing the figures. That's why the annual update is mostly about making sure the underlying data is right and complete — your ITR filed on time, every GSTIN on the PAN reporting correctly, and exports correctly reported, because exports are excluded from turnover for classification.

A suspended or stale registration causes real problems. Banks use the Udyam certificate to classify your loan as MSME priority-sector lending; GeM validates your Udyam online before granting MSE preference; tender committees check the category; and your customers rely on your Udyam status to apply the 45-day payment rule. If your ITR is late, your certificate may show an out-of-date category exactly when you need it.

Reclassification: moving from micro to small, or back

Classification uses composite criteria. Since 1 April 2025 the limits are:

MSME classification limits (from 1 April 2025)

Micro

Investment in plant & machinery up to

₹2.5 crore

Turnover up to

₹10 crore

Small

Investment in plant & machinery up to

₹25 crore

Turnover up to

₹100 crore

Medium

Investment in plant & machinery up to

₹125 crore

Turnover up to

₹500 crore

The rules for moving between categories are asymmetric:

  • Moving up. If you cross the limit for your category on either investment or turnover, you are placed in the next higher category.
  • Moving down. You drop to a lower category only if you fall below the limits of your present category on both investment and turnover.
  • All GSTINs on one PAN count together. Turnover and investment of every unit registered under the same PAN are added up.
  • Exports are excluded from turnover.

Benefits after moving up. The original 2020 rule let an enterprise keep its earlier status only until a year after the close of the year of registration. Notification S.O. 4926(E) of 18 October 2022 replaced that: an enterprise that moves up because of higher investment or turnover keeps all non-tax benefits of its earlier category for three years from the date of the upward change. The Ministry described non-tax benefits as including scheme benefits, the Public Procurement Policy and the delayed-payment provisions. Tax provisions follow tax law separately — check with your CA how the change affects you, for example under the income-tax provisions on payments to MSEs.

Benefits after moving down. Reverse-graduation, whether from reclassification or an actual fall in investment or turnover, keeps you in your present category until the end of the financial year. The new, lower category applies only from 1 April of the next financial year after the year in which the change happened, so a dip in one bad year doesn't strip you of benefits mid-year.

Worked example: a Tiruppur garment unit grows

A proprietorship in Tiruppur makes knitted garments and has a Udyam registration from 2021. Its ITR and GST returns show:

YearPlant & machineryTotal turnoverExportsTurnover for classificationCategory
2024-25₹2 crore₹12 crore₹4 crore₹8 croreMicro (within ₹2.5 crore / ₹10 crore)
2025-26₹3.2 crore₹15 crore₹3.5 crore₹11.5 croreSmall (crossed both micro limits)

Based on the 2025-26 ITR, filed in 2026, the portal moves the enterprise from micro to small and sends a communication. Two points matter for the owner:

  1. Nothing to file to "upgrade". The reclassification comes from the ITR and GST data. The owner should check the annexure, confirm exports were captured (without them, turnover would read ₹15 crore — still small, but the exclusion matters near limits), and download the fresh certificate.
  2. Benefits continue. For non-tax purposes — the 45-day payment rule, MSE procurement preference, schemes meant for micro units — it keeps micro-category benefits for three years from the date of the upward change. A bank or tender committee that looks only at the current category may need to be shown the notification.

Now suppose the unit had only crossed one limit — investment of ₹2.8 crore but turnover for classification of ₹9 crore. It would still move up to small, because crossing either limit is enough. If the next year investment fell back to ₹2.4 crore while turnover stayed at ₹9 crore, it would move back to micro only from the following 1 April, because both figures are now within micro limits.

When you should update: the trigger events

The portal doesn't send reminders for most changes, so build the update into the paperwork you already do when something changes in the business. These are the events that should send you to the Update/Cancel login:

You moved or opened a unit. A new office address, a godown in another city or a second factory all belong on the same registration. Add each place of business as a unit with its full address; schemes such as state capital subsidies and DIC inspections look at the unit's location, and a buyer's vendor-verification team may visit the address on the certificate. Your Udyam number doesn't change when you add a unit or shift your address, even to another state.

You started a new activity. A trader who starts assembling products, a printer who adds packaging, or a garment unit that starts job-work stitching for others should add the new NIC codes. The activity on your certificate decides how lenders, GeM and tender committees read your status — a registration showing only trading activity won't get MSE purchase preference, because the procurement policy covers goods made and services rendered by MSEs, not resale.

You got or gave up GST registration. If you crossed the GST threshold or registered voluntarily, add the GSTIN. Where GST registration is compulsory under the CGST Act, the Udyam notification requires the GSTIN; where it isn't, you may register without it. If you hold several GSTINs on the same PAN, remember they are treated as one enterprise.

Update Udyam when any of these change

0/7

Your bank or contact details changed. Scheme subsidies and buyer payments are often matched against the bank account and contact details on record. A closed account or an inactive email causes quiet failures — a subsidy that never arrives, or an OTP you can't receive when you need to print the certificate for a tender.

Your workforce changed significantly. Employee numbers are self-declared and feed into government data and some state schemes. Update them when the headcount shifts meaningfully, not every month.

You changed legal form. As explained above, a new PAN means a new registration. Plan the switch: register the new entity, move customers, GeM and bank facilities across, and then cancel the old registration.

Cancelling a Udyam registration

Cancel only when the enterprise has closed or the registration should never have existed — for example, a duplicate filed by mistake, or a registration made by an agent with wrong details that you're replacing with a correct one. The cancel option sits in the same Update/Cancel login: authenticate with OTP, choose cancel, select the reason and confirm.

Think before cancelling. Once the registration is gone, invoices you raise afterwards no longer carry MSME status, so buyers won't be bound by the 45-day payment rule on them, and your bank may reclassify your loans. Where you've changed legal form, keep the old registration until the old entity's last invoices are paid and its accounts closed, then cancel.

Cancellation can also happen from the government's side. Under paragraph 9 of the notification, if there's a discrepancy or complaint, the General Manager of the District Industries Centre enquires into the details and sends the matter to the state industries department, which — after giving you a hearing — can amend the details or recommend cancellation to the Ministry.

Penalty for false details. Intentionally misrepresenting or suppressing facts in the registration or the update process attracts the penalty under section 27 of the MSMED Act — a fine of up to ₹1,000 for a first conviction and up to ₹10,000 for each later one. Under-declaring investment to stay "micro" is exactly the kind of misstatement this covers.

Udyam Assist certificates and older registrations

Two groups often ask whether the same update process applies to them. Informal micro enterprises that don't have a PAN or GST registration may hold a Udyam Assist Certificate, issued through the Udyam Assist Platform with the help of a bank, NBFC or other designated agency. That certificate is meant for priority-sector lending; if the business later gets a PAN and wants the full range of MSME benefits, it should take a regular Udyam registration. Our Udyam Assist Platform guide explains the difference.

Enterprises that still hold an old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) or EM-II number should note that those registrations stopped being valid after 31 March 2021 under the Udyam notification. There's nothing to update on a UAM, and no way to revive it — you need a fresh Udyam registration, which the portal lets you create by migrating from the UAM number.

What to do next

Log in once now and check that your addresses, units, NIC codes, bank and contact details are current — it takes ten minutes and costs nothing. Make sure your ITR is filed on time each year so the classification stays accurate, then download a fresh certificate. If you haven't registered yet, start with our Udyam registration guide; to see what your category means for loans and limits, read MSME classification. If you sell to government, keep your GeM profile in step with your Udyam details.
