Tripura has one of the simplest professional tax schedules in India: three salary bands, and a flat ₹2,500 a year for almost every business and profession. What trips people up is the calendar. Since January 2021, employers no longer file monthly returns — they file one annual return in Form VII by 30 April, after paying the whole year's tax — while traders and professionals pay their own tax once a year by 30 September. This guide is for employers, HR and payroll teams, shopkeepers, contractors and professionals in Agartala, Udaipur, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar and the rest of the state. It covers the slabs, the business rates, enrolment on the online portal, due dates, penalties and worked rupee examples.
Quick answer
In Tripura, salaried employees pay nothing up to ₹7,500 a month of monthly gross income, ₹150 a month from ₹7,501 to ₹15,000, and ₹208 a month from ₹15,001. Most businesses and professionals pay ₹2,500 a year. Employers file the annual Form VII by 30 April with the full tax paid; enrolled persons pay by 30 September.

Tripura professional tax slab for 2026
The Tripura Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Taxation Act, 1997 (Tripura Act 3 of 1997) lets the State Government change the rates in its Schedule by notification, as long as they stay within the constitutional ceiling of ₹2,500 a year. The current rates are in the Finance Department notification of 25 July 2018, published in the Tripura Gazette Extraordinary the same day, which superseded the 2013 rates. A corrigendum of 30 October 2018 fixed the middle band so it starts at ₹7,501.
Salary and wage earners are taxed on their monthly gross income:
| Monthly gross income | Tax per month | Tax per year |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹7,500 a month | Nil | Nil |
| ₹7,501 to ₹15,000 | ₹150 a month | ₹1,800 |
| ₹15,001 and above | ₹208 a month | ₹2,496 |
The 2021 Form VII prints the same three bands for every month of the year, which confirms they are still the working rates. We found no later rate notification on the department's site, and payroll references in 2026 apply the same figures.
Tripura's bands are narrow compared with most states. The nil limit of ₹7,500 a month is well below Assam's ₹15,000 or West Bengal's revised limit, so almost every regular employee on a formal payroll in Agartala pays the top rate of ₹208. That matters for employers with staff in several north-eastern states: the same salary can be taxed very differently in Guwahati, Shillong and Agartala.
How the rates got here. Tripura has raised the salary rates several times — in 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2013 — before the 2018 notification simplified the schedule to three bands and lifted the nil limit from ₹5,000 to ₹7,500 a month. The 2013 schedule had five taxable bands from ₹70 to ₹208 a month; if your payroll still shows a ₹70, ₹120 or ₹190 deduction, it is running rates that ended in July 2018.

Rates for businesses and professionals
Apart from salary earners, the 2018 schedule fixes an annual tax for people who pay for themselves. Nearly every entry is ₹2,500 a year, and where someone falls under more than one entry, the highest rate applies.

For dealers, "turnover" means sales in the immediately preceding year, so a shop that sold ₹2.8 lakh last year pays nothing this year even if it is growing fast; the liability starts the year after it crosses ₹3 lakh. The dealer entry now explicitly covers businesses under the Tripura and Central GST Acts, so there is no doubt that GST-registered traders are included. The corrigendum also limited the partnership-firm entry to firms with annual gross turnover above ₹5 lakh.
A final residual entry lets the Government notify a rate of up to ₹2,500 for anyone else engaged in a profession, trade, calling or employment.
Who has to pay and who is exempt
Section 3 makes everyone engaged in a profession, trade, calling or employment in Tripura, and falling in a Schedule class, liable at the Schedule rate. The tax on salaries is collected by the employer; everyone else pays directly after enrolling.
Exemptions. Section 27 says the Act does not apply to people subject to the Army Act, the Navy Act or the Air Force Act who are serving in Tripura. The State Government can exempt other classes by notification in the public interest. Beyond that, the "exemptions" in practice are the nil bands: employees earning up to ₹7,500 a month, and traders with turnover up to ₹3 lakh.
Two employers, or a higher entry. Under section 4, an employee who works for two employers at once, or who is also covered by a non-salary entry with a higher rate (a doctor in a hospital job who also runs a clinic, for example), can give each employer a certificate saying they will enrol and pay themselves. The employers then stop deducting, and the person pays the highest applicable rate once.
Indian staff of foreign missions. Citizens of India working for a diplomatic or consular office or trade commission in Tripura must enrol and pay the tax themselves.

How employers deduct and pay
Section 4 makes every employer deduct the tax from each liable employee's salary before paying it, and makes the employer liable whether or not it deducted. Government employers follow rule 13: the drawing and disbursing officer deducts monthly, and February salary cannot be drawn until any tax due for March to February has been deducted.
The rules on returns changed on 11 January 2021. Before that, rule 12 required a monthly return in Form VII by the last day of each month, with the tax paid. The Tripura Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Taxation (Amendment) Rules, 2021 replaced it with:
- One annual return in Form VII for each financial year, filed on or before 30 April after the year ends, showing the tax deducted and paid for each month.
- Full payment first: before filing, the employer pays the full year's tax into the Government Treasury, and attaches challan copies to the return. Section 6(2) adds that a return without proof of payment is not treated as filed.
- Rule 8 and the old Form VIII were deleted.
The rules no longer set a separate monthly deposit date. The new Form VII, however, records the amount deducted, the interest payable and the payment date for each month, and section 9 charges interest for "the period for which the tax remains unpaid". The safe approach is to deposit each month's deductions through the portal soon after salaries are paid, rather than holding a year's tax until April.
Joiners, leavers and pay changes. Because Tripura's slabs are monthly, the deduction follows each month's gross income. A new joiner in September is taxed from September's salary; a leaver in June has nothing deducted after June. An employee whose pay rises above ₹15,000 moves to ₹208 in the month the higher salary is paid, and one who drops below ₹7,501 — for example during unpaid leave — has nothing deducted that month. Form VII asks for the number of employees in each band for every month, so keep a monthly band count as you run payroll; rebuilding it from payslips in April is slow and error-prone.
Reconcile before you file. Before 30 April, total the tax deducted for each month, compare it with the challans paid, and pay any shortfall with interest at 2% a month. Then file Form VII with the challan copies. A return that shows tax deducted but not paid is not treated as filed under section 6(2), and the department can then assess the tax and add a penalty of up to 200%.

Section 8 sets the enrolled persons' date: before 30 September if you were enrolled before the year began or by 31 August, and within one month of enrolment if you enrol later. The department's FAQ confirms that enrolled persons pay once a year. Assessments for employers must be made within four years of the end of the year, and assessed tax is payable within fifteen days of the demand.
Registration and enrolment on ptax.tripura.gov.in
Section 5 requires every employer (other than a government officer) to obtain a certificate of registration, and every person paying their own tax to obtain a certificate of enrolment. The application must be made within 90 days of becoming liable — or, for an enrolled person, within 90 days of becoming liable at a different rate. The prescribed authority has thirty days to grant the certificate if the application is in order. The certificate states the tax payable and the date, and it serves as a notice of demand.
Everything is online at ptax.tripura.gov.in, the Commissionerate of Taxes & Excise's Profession Tax e-Services portal. Its FAQ says you need a mobile number, an e-mail address and a PAN to apply. After the officer approves the application you download the certificate from your login, and you pay from the same account. Government offices create a DDO profile. Over 32,000 taxpayers are registered on the portal, and a step-by-step enrolment manual and a "know your jurisdiction" page are linked from its home page. For technical problems, the department's FAQ points to its support e-mail.
Worked examples in ₹
Example 1 — a shop assistant. Rina earns ₹7,000 a month in an Agartala garment shop. That is below ₹7,500, so nothing is deducted.
Example 2 — a hospital receptionist. Bijoy earns ₹12,000 a month: ₹150 a month, or ₹1,800 a year. If his pay rises to ₹15,500 from October, the deduction becomes ₹208 a month from October's salary — ₹150 × 6 + ₹208 × 6 = ₹2,148 for the year.
Example 3 — an Agartala distributor with 25 staff. Four helpers earn ₹7,000 (nil), six earn ₹10,000–₹14,000 (₹150), and fifteen earn above ₹15,000 (₹208). Monthly deduction: 6 × ₹150 + 15 × ₹208 = ₹4,020, or ₹48,240 for the year. The firm deposits it monthly and files Form VII by 30 April with all twelve challans. As a dealer with last year's turnover above ₹3 lakh, the firm also pays ₹2,500 a year for itself by 30 September — and a partnership firm's entry carries the same rate, so it pays once.
Example 4 — a dentist in Udaipur. She enrols online, pays ₹2,500 a year by 30 September, and employs one assistant on ₹9,000 a month, for whom she registers as an employer and deducts ₹150 a month.
Example 5 — an auto owner. An owner-driver with one permit for an auto-rickshaw pays ₹1,800 a year. With a second auto on hire the tax rises to ₹2,500.

Penalties, interest and recovery
- Interest (section 9): simple interest at 2% a month (or part of a month) on unpaid tax, for employers and enrolled persons alike. ₹2,500 paid three months after 30 September carries ₹150.
- Not paying a demand (section 10): a penalty of up to 200% of the tax due, after a hearing.
- Late registration, false information, late returns (sections 5 and 6): penalties of up to the amounts the Government notifies — per month of delay for late registration and late returns.
- Recovery (section 11): arrears of tax, penalty, interest and fees are recoverable as arrears of land revenue, and section 16 lets the department collect directly from people who owe you money.
- Offences (section 20): wilful non-compliance can lead, on conviction, to imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to ₹5,000, or both, plus up to ₹100 a day for a continuing offence.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Still filing monthly returns, or none at all. Since January 2021 there is one annual Form VII. Employers who stopped filing altogether when the monthly return ended should file the missing annual returns, with full payment, as soon as possible.
Holding the year's tax until April. The rules ask for payment before the return, not on a monthly date, but interest runs on tax that remains unpaid. Deposit monthly.
Using 2013 rates. Deductions of ₹70, ₹120, ₹140 or ₹190 come from the schedule replaced in July 2018. Correct the payroll master and refund or recover the difference.
Forgetting the business's own tax. Companies, firms and traders pay ₹2,500 a year for themselves by 30 September, separate from staff deductions.
Paying twice under several entries. A person covered by more than one entry pays only the highest rate, once.

0/6Staff in other states and income-tax treatment
Professional tax follows the place of work. An Agartala business with staff in Guwahati applies Assam's April 2025 slabs (nil up to ₹15,000 a month); staff in Shillong follow Meghalaya's annual-income schedule. Our due dates table puts every state side by side, and the state-wise professional tax guide covers the common rules.
Employees can deduct professional tax paid from salary income only under the old income-tax regime; a business can claim its own professional tax as an expense.
