If you pay salaries in Hyderabad, run a company or firm anywhere in Telangana, or practise as a professional there, you owe Telangana's professional tax (PT). The rules are simple once you see them laid out, and since 2026 the Commercial Taxes Department has a new PT module that makes registration and payment easier. This guide is for employers, payroll teams, directors, partners and self-employed professionals. It covers the salary slabs, who else pays, how PTINs are issued now, the monthly Form V return, a screen-by-screen payment guide, interest and penalties, exemptions and worked examples in rupees.
Quick answer
Telangana professional tax is paid on the Commercial Taxes Department's PT module (ptax.tgct.gov.in → PT e-Payment). Employers deduct ₹150 a month from salaries of ₹15,001–₹20,000 and ₹200 a month above ₹20,000, then file Form V and pay by the 10th of the following month. Companies, directors and other enrolled persons pay their annual tax by 30 June.
Salary up to ₹15,000 a month: nil; no February top-up, so the maximum is ₹2,400 a year for employees
Companies, directors and businesses above ₹50 lakh turnover: ₹2,500 a year; each paid partner ₹1,250 a year
GST registrants get a PTIN automatically — check with your PAN before registering
Late payment: interest 2% a month (₹2 per ₹100 per month or part); penalty 25% to 50% of the tax due after a demand
Telangana professional tax slabs for salaried employees
Telangana levies PT under the Telangana Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987, which the state adapted from the Andhra Pradesh law in 2015. Entry 1 of the First Schedule sets the salary slabs:
| Monthly salary or wages | PT per month | Total for 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹15,000 | Nil | Nil |
| ₹15,001 – ₹20,000 | ₹150 a month | ₹1,800 |
| Above ₹20,000 | ₹200 a month | ₹2,400 |
Telangana has no extra February instalment, unlike Maharashtra, so even the top slab stays below the constitutional ceiling of ₹2,500 a year a year. Use gross monthly salary or wages — basic plus allowances — to decide the slab, and check it each month for staff whose pay varies with overtime, incentives or arrears.
The employer carries the risk. Section 5 of the Act makes the employer liable to pay the tax on behalf of every employee whether or not it actually deducted it, so a payroll setting error becomes your cost. The only exception is an employee who also falls under a higher-rate entry or works for more than one employer and gives a certificate that he or she will enrol and pay directly; then the employer stops deducting.

PT is not only a salary deduction. The First Schedule lists more than 30 categories of people and businesses who pay a fixed annual amount on their own account. The ones most businesses meet are:
- Companies registered under the Companies Act with turnover of ₹10 lakh or more, that are not VAT dealers (entry 20): ₹2,500 a year.
- Directors drawing remuneration from a company, other than government nominees (entry 5): ₹2,500 a year.
- Each partner of a firm drawing remuneration (entry 21): ₹1,250 a year.
- Professionals — lawyers, chartered accountants, tax consultants, engineers, architects, management consultants, doctors, dentists, agents, brokers and similar — with more than five years' standing (entry 2): ₹2,500 a year; up to five years: nil.
- Traders and shopkeepers by annual turnover (entry 8): nil below ₹10 lakh, ₹1,250 for ₹10–₹50 lakh, ₹2,500 above ₹50 lakh. Factories (entry 9), hotels and restaurants (entry 14) and contractors (entry 4) follow the same turnover bands.
- Fixed-rate businesses such as petrol pumps, private hospitals, diagnostic labs, beauty parlours, travel agencies, advertising agencies, banks (each branch) and private educational institutions (each branch): ₹2,500 a year.
Where a person falls under more than one entry, only the highest rate applies, according to the department's help notes. A director who also has PT deducted as a salaried employee should not pay twice; the higher entry decides.
Registration and enrolment: getting your PTIN
The Act uses two terms. A certificate of registration is for employers who deduct PT from salaries (section 6(1), Form I). A certificate of enrolment is for anyone liable on their own account — a company, director, partner, professional or trader (section 6(2), Form II). On the new PT module both sit under one PT identification number (PTIN), and on first login you choose whether you need an enrolment-only certificate or a registration-and-enrolment certificate.
If you have GST, you probably already have a PTIN. The department's help document says every business granted GST or VAT registration in Telangana is allotted a PTIN automatically; PTINs are generated in the first week of each month for the previous month's GST and VAT registrations, and the login details are emailed. The module says this generally takes about 30 days. Enter your PAN on the registration page first — if a PTIN exists, the system tells you and re-sends the credentials.
If you don't have GST, register on the module with digital copies of these documents:

0/5Registration is free. The department's information wizard says applications are scrutinised and approved within one working day each, and if something is missing you get seven days to respond. Since a March 2021 amendment to rule 8, you may show the certificate to an officer in digital form.
Register for each place of work. The rules require a separate registration with each assessing authority whose jurisdiction covers a place of work, and the Act penalises wilful failure to register: ₹10 to ₹20 a day of delay for employers and up to ₹5 a day for others.

Due dates: monthly for employers, annual for everyone else
Employers. Every registered employer files a return in Form V each month showing the salaries paid and the tax deducted, and pays the full amount by the 10th of the following month — for example, PT on September salaries is due by 10 October. On the new module, a return counts as filed only once the tax is paid; the return screen leads straight into payment.
Enrolled persons. Under section 10, companies, directors, partners, professionals and traders pay the year's tax before 30 June if they were enrolled by 31 May, and within one month of enrolment if they enrol later in the year. The enrolment certificate itself states the amount and the date and serves as the notice of demand.

How to pay professional tax online in Telangana
The Commercial Taxes Department moved PT to a new module at ptax.tgct.gov.in in 2026. It has separate buttons for monthly return payments and yearly demand payments, a payment-status check and an e-receipt download, and payment does not require a login.
Paying Telangana PT on the new module
- 1
Open PT e-Payment
Open the PT moduleGo to ptax.tgct.gov.in and click PT e-Payment & e-Receipt. Choose Monthly Return Tax Payment for salary deductions or Yearly Demand Payment for the business's own tax.
- 2
Enter your PTIN
Enter the PTIN (or GRN) and check that the name of the firm fetched is correct.
- 3
Monthly — fill the slab table
Select Return Tax, pick the month, and enter the number of employees in each slab (below 15,000, 15,001–20,000, 20,001 and above). The module multiplies employees by the slab rate and shows the total.
Tip: Logged-in employers can file the return from *Return Filing*; it moves to payment automatically.
- 4
Yearly — enter the counts
Choose the financial year and enter the number of firms, additional places of business, directors and partners. Use the other options for tax, interest or penalty demanded after an audit or assessment, or for voluntary payments.
- 5
Pay and save the receipt
Pay through the bank gateway, download the e-receipt, and use Check Payment Status if the bank debits you but no receipt appears.
Once logged in, the dashboard shows a demand report (demand, payments and balance by year and month) and a return report (which months have been filed). Check both before 30 June and at year end; a month marked unfiled is a month that can attract a late-return penalty.
Worked examples in ₹
Example 1 — a 15-person startup in Madhapur. Staff: ten employees earning above ₹20,000, three earning ₹18,000 and two earning ₹14,000.
- Monthly PT deducted: 10 × ₹200 + 3 × ₹150 + 2 × 0 = ₹2,450, paid with Form V by the 10th
- Full year: 12 × ₹2,450 = ₹29,400
- The company's own PT (entry 20): ₹2,500 a year; two salaried directors already have ₹200 a month deducted, so no separate director payment is needed
Example 2 — a partnership trading firm in Warangal. Turnover ₹38 lakh, three partners drawing remuneration, four staff earning ₹16,000 each.
- Firm (entry 8, ₹10–₹50 lakh band): ₹1,250
- Partners: 3 × ₹1,250 a year = ₹3,750
- Staff: 4 × ₹150 × 12 = ₹7,200 over the year, paid monthly
- Annual items (₹5,000) due by 30 June
Example 3 — a chartered accountant in practice. A CA with seven years' standing and no employees enrols and pays ₹2,500 a year by 30 June. A CA in the first five years of practice is exempt under entry 2.
Example 4 — paying late. An employer forgets to pay ₹2,450 for August, due on 10 September, and pays on 25 October. Interest is ₹2 for every ₹100 or part for every month or part: two months × ₹2 × 25 = ₹100. If the department issues a demand and it is still unpaid, a penalty of 25% to 50% of the tax due can be added, and a late Form V can attract ₹5 to ₹100 a day.

Joiners, leavers and staff outside Telangana
PT is charged month by month on the salary actually paid, so people who join or leave during the year pay only for the months they are on your Telangana payroll. A new hire on ₹30,000 a month who joins in November pays ₹200 a month from November to March — ₹1,000 for the year. There is no catch-up in the last month, and no February top-up to worry about.
The department's help notes put the test on the place of work, not the employer's headquarters. A Chennai or Pune company with a team working from Hyderabad deducts Telangana PT for those people and registers in Telangana, while its other staff follow their own states' rules. If an employer has more than one place of work in Telangana, it pays on behalf of the employees at each place, which is why the rules ask for a separate registration with each assessing authority. For remote staff, record where each person actually works and review it when they relocate.
Interest and penalties
The Act stacks four charges, and they are independent of each other:
- Interest — 2% a month (₹2 per ₹100 per month or part) on unpaid tax from the due date, under section 11 and rule 24; it applies whether you failed to deduct or deducted and failed to pay.
- Penalty for non-payment — if you do not pay within the time in a demand notice without reasonable cause, 25% to 50% of the tax due after a hearing, on top of interest (section 12).
- Late return — ₹5 to ₹100 a day of delay (section 7(3)).
- Failure to register or enrol — ₹10 to ₹20 a day for employers, up to ₹5 a day for others; and ₹100 to ₹1,000 for deliberately false information in the application (section 6).
An unregistered employer can therefore face the tax for every month, interest, and per-day registration and return penalties. Registering late and paying arrears voluntarily — the yearly payment screen has options for voluntary tax and interest — is far cheaper than waiting for an assessment.
Amendments, refunds and cancelling a PTIN
The logged-in dashboard on the new module handles the changes most businesses need. Use Amendments when you add a director or partner, open another place of business or change your address, so the yearly demand is recalculated. If you have overpaid — for example by paying a month twice — apply for a refund online; the help document says refunds are applied for online but sanctioned manually by the jurisdictional officer, so keep both receipts ready. When a business closes or stops employing staff, request PTIN cancellation from the same dashboard rather than simply stopping payments, because the demand report will otherwise keep showing arrears.

Exemptions worth knowing
The department's payment help lists the main exemptions: employees earning up to ₹15,000 a month, professionals with up to five years' standing, and traders with annual turnover up to ₹10 lakh. The list of government orders on the department's site also includes exemptions for persons with disabilities of 40% or more and for totally blind persons. Keep the disability certificate on file for each exempt employee so you can explain the nil deduction at assessment.
Common mistakes and how they get fixed
Registering twice. Businesses with GST often apply for a fresh PTIN and then struggle with two accounts. Validate your PAN first; if you already have two, ask your PT officer — the module has a Know Your PTO search — to cancel the duplicate.
Adding a February top-up. Payroll templates copied from Maharashtra sometimes deduct ₹300 in February. Telangana has no such instalment; refund the excess to employees.
Paying but not filing. On the old system a payment without Form V was a common error. On the new module the return is completed when you pay through Return Filing; if you paid through the no-login e-payment, check the return report to confirm the month shows as filed.
Forgetting the company's own PT. Many companies deduct staff PT and forget entry 20 and their directors' entry 5. Check the demand report each June.
Using the head-office state. PT follows the place of work. A Bengaluru company with a Hyderabad team registers in Telangana for those employees; a Hyderabad company's Pune staff come under Maharashtra rules.
Income tax treatment
Employees can deduct professional tax paid from salary income only under the old income-tax regime; the default new regime does not allow it. Businesses and professionals can claim their own PT as a business expense. Our TDS calculator helps you work out the rest of the salary deductions.

Frequently asked questions
Open the Commercial Taxes Department's PT module at ptax.tgct.gov.in and choose PT e-Payment. Employers pick Monthly Return Tax Payment, enter the PTIN, select the month and the number of employees in each slab, and pay through the bank gateway. Companies, directors, partners and professionals use Yearly Demand Payment. You can pay without logging in and download the e-receipt.
For salaried employees, monthly salary up to ₹15,000 is exempt, ₹15,001–₹20,000 pays ₹150 a month, and above ₹20,000 pays ₹200 a month. There is no extra February instalment, so the top slab totals ₹2,400 a year. Companies, directors and most businesses above ₹50 lakh turnover pay ₹2,500 a year.
Employers file the monthly return in Form V and pay the tax deducted by the 10th of the following month. Enrolled persons — companies, directors, partners, professionals and traders — pay their annual tax by 30 June, or within one month of enrolment if they enrol after 31 May.
Interest runs at 2% a month (₹2 per ₹100 per month or part) from the due date. After a demand notice, the officer can add a penalty of 25% to 50% of the tax due. A late return can attract ₹5 to ₹100 a day, and wilfully failing to register can cost an employer ₹10 to ₹20 a day of delay.
Usually not. Under the new PT module, every business that gets GST or VAT registration in Telangana is allotted a PTIN automatically, generally within about 30 days, and the login details are emailed. Check by entering your PAN on the PT registration page before applying afresh.
Yes, once they have practised for more than five years. Lawyers, chartered accountants, doctors, engineers, consultants, agents and similar professionals pay ₹2,500 a year a year after five years' standing; those with up to five years' standing pay nothing. Salaried professionals have PT deducted by their employer instead.
