Buyers ask for it before they add you as a vendor, banks ask for it before an MSME loan, and tender documents ask for it before you can claim EMD exemption. The "MSME certificate" is simply your Udyam Registration Certificate. This guide explains what's on it, how to download, verify and update it in 2026, how long it is valid, and the benefits it actually gives you — with ₹ examples.

Quick answer

An MSME certificate is the Udyam Registration Certificate issued free on udyamregistration.gov.in. It carries a permanent 19-character Udyam number and your classification as micro, small or medium. You can print it any time with OTP, anyone can verify it online, and it never needs renewal.

  • Fee: Free — to apply, print, verify or update

  • Micro = investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore (from 1 April 2025)

  • Micro and small holders can insist on payment within 45 days

  • Classification is refreshed yearly from ITR and GST data — no renewal, but keep details updated

What is an MSME certificate?

Under the Ministry of MSME's June 2020 notification, an enterprise that registers on the Udyam portal is given a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate called the Udyam Registration Certificate. That e-certificate is the MSME certificate. There is no separate "MSME certificate" issued by any other office, and no physical copy is mailed out.

Older documents — the Entrepreneurs Memorandum (EM Part-II) and Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) acknowledgement — stopped being valid after the transition period that ended in 2022. If that's all you hold, migrate to Udyam; banks follow the classification recorded in the Udyam certificate for priority-sector lending, according to the RBI's MSME FAQs.

Two related documents you may come across:

  • Udyam Assist Certificate — issued to informal micro enterprises without PAN/GST through banks and NBFCs on the SIDBI-run Udyam Assist Platform. The RBI treats it at par with a Udyam certificate for priority-sector lending.
  • Udyam certificate for traders — retail and wholesale traders can register, but their benefit is limited to priority-sector lending.

What your MSME certificate shows

Every field is drawn from your registration and government databases. Check each one when you print it — a wrong NIC code or organisation type causes problems with banks and buyers later.

Field on the certificateWhy it matters
Udyam Registration Number (UDYAM-XX-00-0000000)Permanent ID — quote it on invoices and vendor forms
Name of enterprise and organisation typeMust match PAN and GST records
Major activity (manufacturing / services) and NIC codesDecides which schemes apply; traders get PSL benefit only
Enterprise type, year by yearShows micro/small/medium classification and when it changed
Social category and gender of ownerUsed for SC/ST and women-owned procurement and scheme quotas
Date of incorporation and commencementSome schemes need a minimum age of business
Unit/plant locations and official addressVerified at site for subsidies and loans

Date of Udyam registrationRelevant when a buyer checks MSE status at the time of supply

How to get an MSME certificate

If you're not registered yet, the certificate is generated the moment you submit the free Udyam form. The full walk-through, documents and eligibility rules are in our Udyam registration guide; in short:

How to download or print your MSME certificate

Download the Udyam (MSME) certificate as PDF

  1. 1

    Open Print Udyam Certificate

On udyamregistration.gov.in, open the Print / Verify menu and choose Print Udyam Certificate.

    Udyami login (print / update)
  2. 2

    Enter your number and mobile

Type the 19-character Udyam Registration Number (UDYAM-XX-00-0000000) and the mobile number given at registration, plus the captcha.

  3. 3

Choose OTP on mobile or email

Select where the one-time password should go, click Validate & Generate OTP and enter it.

Tip: If neither the mobile nor the email is with you any more, contact the DIC or the MSME Champions control room to update contact details.

  4. 4

    Print or save as PDF

Open Print Udyam Certificate (and the annexure with classification details) and use your browser's print option to save it as PDF.

Lost your Udyam number? Choose Forgot Udyam/UAM No. on the same menu. You verify through the email or mobile used during registration and the number is retrieved after OTP.

MSME certificate verification (for buyers and lenders)

A PDF is easy to edit, so buyers and banks should check every certificate on the portal. Choose Verify Udyam Registration, enter the supplier's Udyam number and the captcha, and the portal shows the registration details held by the Ministry.

Verification matters most to buyers because of the income-tax rule on late payments to micro and small enterprises (see below): you need to know whether each supplier is micro, small or medium, and whether it registered as a manufacturer/service provider or a trader.

Validity: does an MSME certificate expire?

No. The Udyam Registration Number is permanent and there is no renewal fee or process. What the notification does require is that you keep information current: ITR and GST return details for the previous year are updated on the portal, and failure to update within the period the portal specifies can lead to suspension of status.

Your classification can move:

  • Upward: if turnover or investment crosses your category's limit, you keep the existing status until one year after the close of the year of registration, then move up.
  • Downward: if figures fall below both limits, you stay in the current category until the financial year ends and get the lower category from the next 1 April.

The April 2025 revision (S.O. 1364(E)) raised every limit — micro now goes up to ₹10 crore turnover, small to ₹100 crore and medium to ₹500 crore — so many enterprises moved down a category and became eligible for micro or small benefits.

How to update or correct your MSME certificate

Use Update/Cancel Udyam Registration, log in with the Udyam number and OTP, and edit: official address, additional units, bank account, NIC activity codes, number of employees, contact details or social category. Save, verify with OTP, then print the updated certificate. Name and PAN follow your PAN records — change them with the Income Tax Department first.

An enterprise may hold only one Udyam registration; add new activities or plants to it instead of registering again. If you've closed the business, the same option lets you cancel. Knowingly declaring false information is punishable under section 27 of the MSMED Act with a fine of up to ₹1,000 for a first conviction and up to ₹10,000 for repeat offences.

45-day payment protection. Section 15 of the MSMED Act requires a buyer to pay a micro or small supplier by the agreed date — never later than 45 days from acceptance — or within 15 days where there is no written agreement. Late payment attracts compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and you can file a claim with the state MSE Facilitation Council through the MSME Samadhaan portal. Parliament passed the MSMED (Amendment) Bill in August 2026 to make those councils faster, with time limits for mediation and arbitration; check the Ministry's notifications for when it takes effect.

The buyer's tax deduction (43B(h), now 37(2)(g)). For years up to FY 2025-26, section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act 1961 allowed a buyer to deduct amounts owed to micro and small enterprises only in the year actually paid, if paid after the MSMED Act time limit. From tax year 2026-27, the same rule continues as section 37(2)(g) of the Income-tax Act 2025.

Worked example. A Pune distributor buys ₹10 lakh of packaging from a micro manufacturer on 10 March 2026 with no written credit agreement. Payment was due within 15 days, by 25 March. The distributor pays on 20 May. Result: the ₹10 lakh is disallowed in FY 2025-26 and deducted only in tax year 2026-27 — at a 25% tax rate that's ₹2.5 lakh of tax paid a year early, plus interest owed to the supplier. Now change one fact: the parties had signed a 45-day credit agreement, so payment was due by 24 April. A payment on 20 April falls after 31 March but within the agreed limit, so the expense stays deductible in FY 2025-26. That's why suppliers should get written credit terms and quote their Udyam number on every invoice.

Estimate the interest a late buyer owes you:

Interest on a delayed MSME invoice

Applicable Rate (3× bank rate)17.25%
CompoundingMonthly rests (Sec 16, MSMED Act)
Interest Payable₹21,639.81
Total Amount Recoverable₹10,21,639.81

Lending and procurement. MSME loans count as priority-sector lending, and the RBI bars banks from taking collateral on MSE loans up to ₹20 lakh. Under the Public Procurement Policy for MSEs, central ministries, departments and CPSEs must buy 25% of their annual purchases from micro and small enterprises, and registered MSEs can usually bid without paying earnest money in central tenders.

Common mistakes with MSME certificates

  1. Paying an agent for a "certificate". The official certificate is free and printable any time.
  2. Keeping an old UAM certificate. It has no legal value now — migrate.
  3. Not putting the Udyam number on invoices. Buyers can't apply the 45-day rule if they don't know you're micro or small.
  4. Ignoring the classification annexure. Buyers check the year-wise category; a stale classification can cost you the protection.
  5. Registering twice for two units. One PAN, one Udyam — add the second unit.

What to do next

Print your certificate, add the Udyam number to your invoice template, and put written credit terms of no more than 45 days in your purchase orders. Not registered yet? Follow the Udyam registration guide. Need a GSTIN as well? See GST registration. If a buyer is already late, calculate what they owe with the MSME delayed payment calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Since 1 July 2020 the only MSME registration is Udyam, and the e-certificate it issues — the Udyam Registration Certificate — is what banks, buyers and tender documents mean by an MSME certificate. Older Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) and EM-II certificates are no longer valid; holders must migrate to Udyam on the portal.
