IDEMI is the government institute on the Eastern Express Highway at Chunabhatti, near Sion, that most Mumbai engineers know for one thing: calibration certificates. Its NABL-accredited labs calibrate meters, gauges and thermocouples for factories, and its test labs check products for electrical safety and EMC. It's also a training institute, with AICTE diplomas for Class 10 students and short courses for working technicians. This guide covers both sides using IDEMI's own 2026-27 admission notice and service pages: courses, fees, admission dates, what the labs test, the extension centres and how to get there.

Quick answer

IDEMI Mumbai (Institute for Design of Electrical Measuring Instruments, now MSME Technology Centre, Mumbai) is a Government of India society under the Ministry of MSME, founded in 1969, at Swatantryaveer Tatya Tope Marg, Chunabhatti, Sion, Mumbai 400022. It runs AICTE diplomas, PG and short courses, NABL-accredited calibration labs, product testing (safety, EMC, environmental, pumps) and a tool room.

  • Diplomas in Tool & Die Making, Robotics & Mechatronics and 3D Animation & Graphics: ₹24,000 a semester, merit-based, Class 10 pass

  • Registration fee ₹200 per course; 2026-27 registration opened on 17 April 2026

  • NABL accreditation: calibration CC-2287, testing TC-5538 (ISO/IEC 17025:2017)

  • Extension centres in Bengaluru, Sakinaka (Andheri East) and Nagpur

What IDEMI is

The Government of India set up IDEMI as a society in 1969 to help the Indian instrument industry grow — electrical, electronic and process-control instruments — through design help, quality control and training. It runs under the Ministry of MSME. A governing council chaired by the Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner (MSME) oversees it, and a Principal Director heads it. The Department of Scientific & Industrial Research recognises it as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO). It also holds ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D (aerospace) certification.

The Ministry lists IDEMI among its 18 MSME Technology Centres, with the sector "Electrical & Electronic Components Design & Manufacturing and Calibration & Testing". That is why its notices now say MSME Technology Centre, Mumbai. It is the only one of the 18 whose main business is measurement. See all the centres in our MSME Technology Centres guide, or open the IDEMI directory profile for a map.

People search for it as "IDEMI Sion" and "IDEMI Chunabhatti" — it's the same campus. Chunabhatti is the neighbourhood and Harbour-line station; Sion is the better-known area next to it.

IDEMI diploma courses and fees (2026-27)

IDEMI's three-year diplomas are AICTE-approved. MSBTE (the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education) has certified them as equivalent to its own diplomas — Tool & Die Making to Mechanical Engineering, and 3D Animation & Graphics to Information Technology.

Diploma (3 years)SeatsMinimum qualificationFee per semester
Tool & Die Making60Class 10 (first year); 12th Science, 12th Vocational Science or ITI (direct second year)₹24,000
Robotics & Mechatronics30Same₹24,000
3D Animation & Graphics60Same₹24,000

What it costs: six semesters at ₹24,000 is ₹1,44,000 in tuition, plus the registration fee and any other charges in the prospectus. SC/ST students have their tuition reimbursed after they pass each academic year, but pay the other fees. Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC, PH and EWS candidates as per rules. The admission notice says seat numbers are provisional.

The course page gives the age band as 15–18 (three years' relaxation for SC/ST), but its cut-off date still says 1 July 2025. Ask the training office ([email protected]) to confirm the age rule for your year before you register. IDEMI does not publish a hostel for diploma students — plan to commute.

How admission works — and the 2026 dates

There's no entrance exam for the diplomas: IDEMI ranks applicants on merit and publishes up to three merit lists. For 2026-27:

To apply, register on idemi.org/training/aicte, pay ₹200 for each course you want (₹100 for SC/ST, non-refundable), and watch the site for the merit lists. If you're selected, report with all original documents and the fee before the deadline. Reserved-category candidates need a caste certificate, and OBC candidates a non-creamy-layer certificate. Spot admissions sometimes follow if seats remain, as in 2025. The 2026 cycle is closed, so expect the next one to open around April.

For course-specific questions, the 2026 notice lists separate coordinators: Tool & Die Making 7021221498, Robotics & Mechatronics 9819495547, 3D Animation 9821473895.

PG diplomas, post diplomas, short courses and online training

If you already have a diploma or degree, IDEMI's longer NSQF courses are the main draw.

  • PG diplomas (18 months, NSQF level 8, 25 seats each): Tool Design & CAD/CAM, Mechatronics, Mechanical Product Design (B.E. in the relevant branch), and Advanced Animation & Film Making (graduates, preferably IT or multimedia). Listed fee ₹1,20,000.
  • Post diplomas (12 months, NSQF level 6): Tool Design & CAD/CAM (diploma in mechanical, production, electrical, electronics or instrumentation) and Advanced Animation & Film Making. The animation post diploma is listed at ₹80,000.
  • Six-month NSQF courses (25 seats): Master Certificate in Mechatronics (level 6, ₹40,000, for diploma holders), Advanced Embedded Technology (level 6, ₹30,000, for diploma, B.E. or B.Sc. holders), 3D Animation with Maya (level 5, ₹30,000, after Class 10) and 3D Animation & Special Effects (level 6, ₹60,000, after Class 12). Graphics & Web Designing is a three-month course at ₹25,000.

The PG page still shows an old 2020-21 advertisement next to these fees, and the 10% discount for OBC, NT and women candidates may have changed. Confirm the current fee with the course coordinator before you pay. IDEMI also runs government-sponsored free or subsidised batches under schemes such as ESDP, the SC-ST Hub, NBCFDC and MeitY animation courses. These are announced on the home page, so check it each month.

For working engineers, the professional courses are short and specific. They include a two-day workshop on dimensional metrology or on electrical instrument calibration (₹7,000), a three-day workshop on calibrating pressure, temperature and flow instruments (₹9,000), and online programmes on ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and internal audit (three days, ₹7,000) and measurement uncertainty under NABL-141 (two days, ₹6,000). Quality managers preparing a lab for NABL accreditation use these.

Calibration labs: what you can send to IDEMI

This is IDEMI's best-known service. Its labs were first accredited in 1989 under the Department of Science and Technology's scheme and later by NABL under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The certificate number is CC-2287. IDEMI says its standards are traceable to SI units through national labs including NPL India, NIST (USA) and PTB (Germany).

LabTypical instruments
Electro-technicalMultimeters, calibrators, energy meters and reference standards, CT/PT test sets, HV testers, megohmmeters, oscilloscopes
ThermalRTDs, thermocouples, temperature gauges and indicators, SPRTs (fixed-point method)
PressurePressure gauges, dead-weight testers, digital pressure calibrators, manometers
Fluid flowTurbine, magnetic, mass, vortex, ultrasonic and positive-displacement flow meters

Its customers include transformer, motor, switchgear and cable makers, and continuous-process plants (cement, steel, petrochemicals, pharma, dairy, automobiles). It also handles aviation, naval, space and defence calibrations and biomedical lab equipment. For an MSME, the practical point is simple: if a customer audit or ISO 9001 surveillance asks for NABL-traceable calibration certificates, IDEMI can issue them. Download the Customer Request Form from the calibration page, or contact the electro-technical lab at [email protected] (extension 240).
